Athea Junior Ladies

Athea 1 – 12 Ahane 1 – 11

Congratulations to the Athea Ladies who beat Ahane in the Division 3 League Final in Ahane last Tuesday evening in Ahane. It was a hard fought win, with Athea leading throughout the game. Captain Carla Sheehy accepted the trophy on behalf of the team and paid tribute to the background team of Michael Reidy and David O’Connor as well as a special mention for the younger members of the team who stepped up and contributed greatly to the overall result. In fact, it is the first piece of silverware to return to the Athea Ladies Club in 11 years!

Oliver McGrath RIP was also remembered for his role in the early years of the club, providing commentary for their first match in 1991 vs Ballylanders in Ballyagran.

A special mention to sponsors Sean Hennessy Electrical Super Stores for coming on board at the beginning of the season.

Best of luck to the Ladies in the upcoming Championship.

Athea Junior B Men’s

The Junior B team had a good win over St Senan’s on Tuesday evening last in Glin on a score line of Athea 0 -15 to St. Senan’s 2 – 04, it was a close match throughout, with Athea kicking a few good scores over the bar in the final stages of the game.

Athea U17 Boys

The boys are playing Granagh/Ballingarry in Athea on Saturday at 7 p.m in the final round of the league stage. It is very tight in the group, with any one of four teams able to top the table.  A win would guarantee us a place in the championship final, whereas a loss on Saturday would probably see us contesting the shield final, depending on other results.

Dog Fouling

There was widespread dismay at the amount of dog dirt in the GAA pitch last weekend. This is very serious for all the kids and adults who play there all the time. The kids especially spend time on the ground, and if the ball lands on this dog dirt it will get on their hands and clothes. We are appealing to dog owners to not let their dogs off their leads and definitely not on to the playing areas. It would be unfortunate if dogs had to be banned from the GAA grounds.
