‘Celebrations’

There were many celebratory events in the parish over the weekend, and to all who celebrated we wish all good wishes. Firstly to Mary Collins of J.P’s who, on Saturday night last, celebrated her 80th birthday along with family and friends at ‘The Gables’- a great night was enjoyed by everyone.

Also on Saturday night Darragh Sweeney (son of Anna-Mai and the late Pat) had his 30th birthday celebration at The Gables also.

On the same night Gary O’Connor of Templeathea celebrated his 30th Birthday along with his girlfriend Lorraine Herbert, family and friends at Brown Joe’s. Again everyone “had a ball”.

On Sunday it was the turn of Teresa Griffin of Fairy St, who, at her home, had a lovely “85th” birthday again with all her daughters and sons and grandchildren and many friends and what a lovely sunny evening it was for the barbecue and eats. Canon Kelly, we were told, also had reached a huge milestone at the weekend – 61 years having been ordained a priest.

Congratulations to Sarah Griffin daughter of Kathleen and Gerry, who has become engaged to Martin Chawke, son of Dick and Marian. Wishing them every happiness.

I have to congratulate the Athea choir who are going from strength to strength and have added some lovely new songs to their collection. Anyone who hasn’t heard them singing at Mass doesn’t know what they are missing. Well done to them all!

On Saturday night then on “Winning Streak” there was much excitement all around when Helen Smith’s name was called out for next week’s show. They say “it’s better to be born lucky than rich” – and Helen is definitely a real lucky person. Ten years ago she was also called out for the show but on that occasion there was “Foot and Mouth” in the country and she wasn’t allowed travel up and someone had to play for her. Well everyone will be rooting, no doubt, for Helen on Saturday night – not only her family and relatives but all her “Bingo” friends also I’m sure will wish her all the very best.

Well are you all ready for the ‘Mangerton Mountain’ climb on Saturday for the Hall Fund-raiser – and it’s meant to be a good sunny day  – fingers crossed! Bring good footwear, bottles of water, a stock to help you along and a bite to eat. You need only go as far as you are able “The Devils Punchbowl” is meant to be a lovely picnic point 2 hours up. Anyone still looking for a free seat on the bus ring A.S.A.P. on 087-1233361 – so that numbers can be accommodated. The meeting point is 8.25 am on Sunday morning at the Hall.
