Tidy Towns

An attempt is being made to resurrect the Tidy Towns group for Athea again. If anyone in the village is interested in getting involved with a view to setting up a committee please call to Lal Browne at his office. It would make a tremendous difference to the village if enough volunteers could be recruited as there are loads of improvements that could be made here if people were willing to give a bit of time over the spring/summer months.

Crafty Corner Groups

The Abbeyfeale craft corner group meets each Wednesday evening from 7pm – 9pm in the new West Limerick Resources office Mountmahon, Abbeyfeale. If you are interested in learning craft skills such as knitting & crochet, then this is the group for you. All are welcome and new members are encouraged to come along.

Boxercise Classes

Boxercise Classes with Martina will resume in the Con Colbert Memorial Hall from this Thursday morning at 10.00am to 11.00am. This is an excellent way to burn fat and tone up. All are welcome.

‘Post Easter News’

A few ‘Congratulations’ are in order this week. Firstly we welcome the new babies locally. Evelyn and Liam Moloney of Killeaney were blessed with a new baby girl recently – Catherine Ellen a little sister for Liam Óg . Congratulations to Evelyn’s Mom Eileen Aherne of Parkana, Athea who is a proud grandmother once again.

Also Michael O’Connor and his wife Sinead are the proud parents of new son Daniel also born lately, a little brother for Mike. Congratulations also to Margaret and Mike O’Connor of Fairy Street the proud grandparents.

We congratulate  the U-13’s girls Basketball team who on Sunday last got 3rd place here in Athea in the Community Games. Well done to the young  U-13 Boys team who also got 3rd place in the games. Here’s to next year when they all will be a year older and wiser.

Congratulations also to Courtney Carroll of Templeathea and Eoin Sheahan of Knocknagorna who both came in 4th place in Art U-8 and Handwriting respectively in Shanagolden recently again in Community Games.

Well done to both Denis Greaney of Templeathea and Mark O’Connor of Dalton Street who both played with the Limerick Minors against Cork on Saturday evening last. Despite not winning against a very strong Cork team they must be complimented and it’s the first time that 2 players from Athea have been on the Limerick Minors panel.

Birthday wishes and congratulations go to Donie Lyons of Drumreask who along with his wife Betty and many of his musician friends celebrated his 70th Birthday at the Ramble Inn in Abbeyfeale recently.

Congratulations and good wishes are also sent to Anita Carroll of Templeathea who had a surprise 30th party sprung on her at The Top of the Town recently.  A great night was enjoyed by family, relatives and friends.

Well done to Anita and Kieran’s daughter Courtney also who came in 3rd place in the U -8’s Art Competition in the Community Games in Shanagolden recently and to Eoin Sheahan of Knockangorna who got 4th place also in the Handwriting competition.

Staying with Community Games  further congratulations go to the U-13 Athea Girls Basketball team who came 3rd in their Games here in the ports Hall on Sunday last and also to the U-13 boys who despite some being just 8 and 9 years old came in 3rd place, also  in the  U-13 Boys Basketball  Community Games.

Well done to them all and of course to their dedicated trainer Trish Phillips Aherne – a woman with “boundless energy and enthusiasm”.

Please support Kathleen Ambrose and her son Micheál and his cousin Shane who on the May Bank Holiday weekend will take part in the Limerick run in aid of the Josh Keane fund. Every little helps a lot.

Best of luck to Athea United U-19’s who play the shield final on Saturday in Clounreask V Rathkeale at 2.30pm.
