Kathleen’s Corner-28/11/12

Sincere congratulations and good wishes go to Mary Anne White of Coole East who celebrated her ‘80th’ birthday on Saturday night last at the Devon Inn, where her family had organised a great party for her. Everyone had a very enjoyable night. Here’s to the next ‘10’ years of health and happiness.

Congratulations also to Jerry Griffin of Brookfield House who travelled to America with his wife Kathleen recently where he celebrated his 70th birthday along with relatives. They had a great time despite the storm and “Hurricane Sandy”.

Congratulations to Marie and Vinnie Wrenn who received their Gold Pins at the recent Pioneer Social at the Devon Inn – having been pioneers for 50 years. Well done to them both.

Congratulations and well done to all those who took part in the ‘Tomathon’ or who supported the fundraising in any way for Pieta House. On Friday night last a huge crowd attended the handing over of the cheque to Joan Freeman of Pieta House. The total amount came to the huge sum of €177,764.00. Also €10,000 was raised in England for suicide prevention. The Carrigkerry Wrenboys added a great atmosphere on the night. The money raised will be of huge help in the prevention of suicide. Every €1,000 raised will help to save a life.

John Joe Tierney is again holding a grand fundraising Céilí at the Hall on this Saturday night starting at 9.30pm. Last year’s Céilí was a huge success and raised a great sum for the hall. So please give it your full support.

We will have more news on the forthcoming Christmas Fair next week, which again is another hall fundraiser which we ask you to support. Rather than holding the usual annual draw-we felt, in these times of recession, we would have different fundraising events to pay the hall bills this year.

Sincere sympathy goes to the family and relatives of both Maureen Scollard of Knockfinisk and Pat O’Connor of Glenduff who were both laid to rest – going to their  “eternal reward” this week. ‘May the light of heaven be theirs’.

Don’t forget to call along to the ‘Athea Crafts Group’ stall on Friday next and the following Friday between 9.30am-1pm. They will be selling their hand-made bits and pieces near Colleen’s Cake Stall. Great to see such industrious people!

A programme just on RTE about TAX-it said “Tax is like plucking a goose – trying to get the most amount of feathers with the least amount of “hissing”.

Knockdown News-28/11/12

Sincere sympathies to Joe the Kerryman Quill and his son Tommy from O’Malley Park, Limerick on the unexpected death of Joe’s wife Bridie, nee Long of Lyreacrompane, last weekend. They had many local connections in West Limerick who will miss them very much. Bridie always submitted articles to local journals. May she rest in peace.

Sympathies too to the Mullane family Lisready, on the death last weekend of Joan, in her 101st year.

A great night was held in Knockdown last Friday night by the Killeaney AFC committee. Congratulations to all who received awards as follows: Player of the Year is Paudie Connell. Youth Player of the Year is Shane Fitzgerald. Supporters of the year are the Two Marians ( Cummane & Harrison) Club persons of the Year went to Anne & Donie McGrath. The Hall of Fame award went to a very popular man who did great work for the youth in the early days of the club. He now lives in Clara -The King himself -Gerry Collins, who came down for the night with his three friends and entertained us all. The Lotto now stands at €6400. Keep buying the tickets as all funds are needed to keep the club thriving.

The Clounleharde School Reunion group would appreciate any old photographs taken back through the years in the school. Personally I do not ever remember a camera in the school in the 60’s but I know there were photos taken in earlier years. All photos will be scanned and returned promptly.

I got a message from Perth on Sunday night as follows: 7am. 27 degrees. So the families who are coming home for Christmas will have to wrap up well to cope with this Irish weather.

I believe that the local journals will be out very soon. It is a sure sign of Christmas when we see these on the shelves. How the year has flown.

Glin is preparing for the Celtic Tenors who will be performing in the Church on Friday December 21st. Tickets are available in the local shops.

Glin Library is closed til December 11th.

Gerry Collins, Maura White, Marian Cummane and Peg Prendeville
