Christmas  Street Lighting

The annual Church gate collection to help with the Christmas Street Lighting will take place this coming weekend, November 26th/27th at all Masses. Your help would be very much appreciated as it is becoming more expensive every year to run the Street Lighting with the cost of electricity going through the roof. The lighting adds a bit of life to the village over the Christmas season and it would be a shame not to be able to continue with it.

Athea National School

Athea National School will be holding their annual School Concert on December 8th. More details at a later date.

‘Congratulations’

Sincere congratulations and good wishes go to Aine and Michael Reidy of ‘Village Living’, Lower Road who were blessed with their first baby a little boy on Monday last. We send good wishes also to the proud grandparents Margaret and Paudie Reidy and to Aine’s parents in Abbeyfeale Joannie and Liam Murphy.

Congratulations also go this past weekend to Carla Sheehy, Hillside Drive who celebrated her 21st Birthday last weekend along with her family and friends. Everyone had a great night.

Well done to each and every one of the cast who once again performed to a packed house at the fundraising “Walking on Sunshine” concert on Sunday night last. They did themselves and Athea proud and what a talented bunch.  In the next couple of weeks we will have an account of what is left on our hall debt and we thank all of you for your support.

On Sunday next 27th at Knockanure Community Centre there will be an indoor market and table top sale from 2 – 5 pm. If you have any crafts you want to sell , jewellery, cakes, books unwanted gifts, clothes, toys and indeed anything re-saleable just ring Mary on 068-49799 or 087- 7528626 to book a table  which costs just €10. Everyone is welcome.

Hopefully all the kids have their letters ready for Santa on this Thursday night when he arrives in Athea on his sleigh about 6.30pm. There will be a bucket collection in aid of the Friends of St Ita’s on the night. We hope the weather will remain dry.

Two very interesting programmes on as I write these lines this Monday night – “Arrivals” – which followed the lives of families and individuals who had recently left Ireland to work in Canada and Australia due to lack of work here. Despite now having work and making money overseas they all missed their families, friends and their homeland. It’s sad that ‘Emigration was their only option.

Then followed  ‘’Frontline’ with Pat Kenny discussing the terrible alcohol problem that we have in Ireland, with one father telling how his son was found dead in a river after a party and a family friend who was looking for him fell in and drowned- what tragedy.
