Kathleen’s Corner-27/05/2015

By Kathleen Mullane

Well it was a great day on Saturday afternoon last when parents and their children gathered in Páirc na nGael for the annual Community Games. Luckily it was a very pleasant day and the games went off without a drop of rain! It was great also to see both boys and girls partaking in all the events. Well done to all those who helped in any way to organize and run off the games. Best of luck to the winners who now go forward to the County Finals in the near future.

Congrats to Kevin Murphy of Dirreen (son of Noreen and Denis) who celebrated his 21st birthday on Saturday night last at the Top of the Town. A brilliant night was enjoyed by family, relatives and friends alike.

Incidentally the very best of luck to all the students who are heading off to Canada, the USA and further afield in the next few days to work for the summer months and the best of luck also to all the secondary students who will be starting their Junior & Leaving Cert exams next week.

Things are “gearing up” for the “Fun/Adventure Run” which is being held on June 7th and organized by the local GAA Club. Many are taking to the roads getting fit for the event which, if last year’s event is anything to go by, should be a great success. If anyone wishes to help out please contact Kevin O’Keeffe on 087-7636568.

Well Athea was in a state of shock last week when news filtered through of the sudden death of Marion White (nee O’Connor) of Gortnagross. Marion was much loved by so many, she did so much volunteer work, organizing the annual Fashion Show to send people to Lourdes and going to Somalia and various other places doing volunteer nursing work. Huge crowds came to pay their last respects at Kelly’s Funeral Parlour on Sunday evening. Concelebrated Mass on Monday had 15 priests in attendance. Burial took place afterwards in Holy Cross. ‘May the light of heaven be hers’.

The death occurred suddenly also last week of Denis Quaid of Dirreen. Denis was very well known in the ‘racing circuit’ and will no doubt be very sadly missed by all the racing enthusiasts. Denis will be laid to rest on today Wednesday.  Go ndeana Dia trócaire le na h-anam.

The Orlaith Geoghegan fundraising night at the Rathkeale House Hotel on Saturday May 16, was a tremendous success and a very enjoyable night that was enjoyed by the 600 attendance. The musicians and singers provided great entertainment and all involved in holding the night are to be complimented. The following is a note from Orlaith’s parents Martin and Jackie:

“On April 22, Orlaith Geoghegan was admitted to the Rainforest Ward at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London, where she commenced treatment for her condition under the care of Dr Khalid Hussein specialises in Paediatric Endocrinology with special interests in Hypoglycaemic disorders. To date Orlaith has responded well to treatment received however her care needs continue to be demanding and this treatment will be the norm for the foreseeable future.

Orlaith’s parents, Jackie and Martin, would like to take this opportunity to extend their gratitude and say thank you for the overwhelming support received from the communities of Limerick and further afield’ Particular thanks is extended to neighbours, friends and family who have made themselves available and offered support during this difficult time. To the members of the Orlaith Geoghegan Benefit Fund who, without exception, generously gave their time to the successful fundraising efforts and to all those who contributed to the fundraising effort.”

The Limerick Association, under the chairmanship of John Giltenan, a native of Rathkeale, will hold a Benefit Night for Orlaith in Kilburn, London on Saturday 26, September. More details nearer the time.

The untimely death of broadcaster and television presenter Derek Davis, caught us all on the hop and he will be a sad loss to his profession. He was much loved for his friendly and relaxed approach that put people he was talking to at ease. Many will recall his year spent on the showband circuit with his band Mean Tom and the Tree Tops. Big Tom was the top attraction at the time and Derek went on the road as friendly opposition to him. He was a gentle giant and he enjoyed a very successful career and he left a wonderful collection of memories behind to remind us all of his many talents. May he rest in Peace.

Congratulations to West Limerick102FM Community Radio who celebrated ten years on air last week. A large crowd turned up at the station on Saturday afternoon last to join with staff and volunteers to celebrate the happy occasion. A lot of people from the locality have being involved in the journey which commenced on March 1st 2002 as Newcastle West 103 Radio. This fledgling station closed after six months to allow an application to be made to the BCI. A trial month on air followed in 2003 and eventually a five year broadcasting licence was awarded two years later.

The Station went on air on Sunday, May 15th 2005 and Eileen Flynn O’Sullivan from Carrigkerry was the first voice to be heard. She went on to become one of the most loved and sought after voices and her involvement was spread over many programmes. Irish Television was present to capture this great occasion of community involvement by so many people in West Limerick. Limerick Matters goes out each Wednesday at 7pm on SKY 191 Channel and it should feature the visit to the radio on this coming Wednesday 3rd June.

Shanagolden Community Hall celebrates its 65th Anniversary this year, and they are holding a Showband Concert to mark the occasion on Friday 19th June. The line-up will include Tommy Drennan, Trudy Lawlor, Ronan Collins, Sean O’Dowd, Lorraine and the Conquerors. It is an all ticket event and they cost € 25 each and they are available from Community Council members and also in the local shops. A great night is promised and bar facilities will be available.

Thomond Archaeological & Historical Society will have a full day outing to Cobh and Spike Island on Sunday 28th. June 2015 leaving Limerick city at 8.000am.  This should prove to be a most memorable visit which will give us an opportunity to view one of the world’s largest cruise liner ‘The Royal Princess’ which is 19 decks high and will be berthed in Cobh that day and will depart at 6pm.  The visit will include Cobh’s famous Cathedral St. Colman’s, the Titanic Memorial, Lusitania Victims burial plot, Jack Doyle the Gorgeous Gael’s grave.  We will also visit Spike Island with a viewing of the home of ‘Little Nellie of Holy God’.  The trip includes guided tours throughout.  As seats are limited early booking is advisable.  Contact Pat O’Donovan PRO 087 9977340.
