‘Baby Boom’

Well last week was a wonderful week with an abundance of new babies, all girls, arriving in our Parish! We start by congratulating Tina and Diarmuid Collins of Templeathea on the birth of their new baby girl Ella, a little sister for Jamie and Mark. Again in Templeathea Gráinne and Conor Brouder were blessed with their first baby, a little girl they are calling Seoidín. Next were Sharon O’Donnell and Con Ambrose also of Templeathea who had a little girl they are naming Ella, a sister for their son Dylan. And last but by no means least Helen and Paul Hickey of Upper Athea also had a little girl they are calling Niamh. (Athea Coiste na nÓg and Athea United will be sad there’s no boys however, I’m sure Liz O’Sullivan, Helen’s sister, will be delighted to recruit the 4 girls for the Ladies Football! We congratulate all the very proud parents and also the grandparents.

Congratulations and very well done to Athea United Junior ‘B’ team who won the League Cup against Knockaderry in Clounreask on Friday evening last. It went to an exciting finish in the end with Athea winning on penalties which was an extremely “TENSE TIME”!

Sincere sympathy is extended to the Murphy family on the death of Mary over the weekend. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother and housekeeper. She will be sadly missed by all ‘May the light of heaven be hers’

The annual Fianna Fáil collection takes place this weekend before all Masses. Your generosity as always would be appreciated.

Well during the Easter holidays and the run up to Easter despite the hard cold weather the dust was “rising off the ground” everywhere had got so dry, now once again we are back to square one and fields and lawns are so wet. Nothing seems to be growing and turf cutting it seems is at a standstill or very minimal.  Farmers are lucky to be receiving fodder from England to feed their cattle, some in dire straits. However we must remember those in China who haven’t a home left after their earthquake with entire families wiped out, those in Boston who are without legs and arms following the Marathon atrocity and the many who died in Texas after the fertiliser explosion. It makes our complaints seem so “trivial”

Knockdown News-24/04/13

Well done again to Gerard Barrett, who put on a great performance on the Late Late show last Friday night. He was so confident and assured and pleasant; we will watch his future with interest.

There will be an historical walk with the Thomond Archaeological and Historical Society in the Ballyhahill area next Sunday starting from Glin Church car park around 2pm. Everybody is welcome. You would never know what we might learn about our own place.

I believe that the cuckoo has been heard but I have not had the pleasure yet. Swallows have been spotted too so summer might be on the way. The turf machines are ready and rearing to go.

All roads will be leading to Newcastle West this weekend for the Éigse Michael Hartnett. I am looking forward to seeing Spoken Dance in action on Thursday night in the Newcastle West library. Spoken Dance’ was born out of a community based integration dance class that was facilitated by the Limerick County Arts Office and the Irish Wheelchair Association at the University of Limerick in 2005. It is under the guidance of Mary Hartney. Both abled and disabled dance together and include the wheelchair in the movements.  “Roles of dependence and independence are constantly being exchanged as each dancer gains insight into the other dancer’s experience.”

Killeaney Lotto stands at €8400. Numbers drawn were 11 – 12 – 16 – 23. Mary and Nicola Sheahan won €80. Eoin Hand got €30. Mike and Cathal Cummane shared €20, Michael O’Shaughnessy and Miriam O’Shaughnessy both won €20. Five free tickets went to Maebh Dunne and Johnny Lyons. Promoter’s prize went to Joe McGrath. Next week’s draw will be held in Dunne’s Bar on Sunday night. Killeaney club wishes to thank all who support the weekly lotto which is vital to the running of the club.
