ABBEYFEALE COMMUNITY ALERT:  Fraud is everywhere, we are all at risk of losing our money every day.  Last year, across Ireland, people had €98.6 million stolen from their bank accounts, an increase of over 16% when compared to 2022, according to Fraud Smart and the Banking and Payments Federation of Ireland.  Criminals transfer the stolen money through bank accounts to conceal their crime.  They can trick anyone into using their accounts.  Without access to your account, criminals will not be successful.  Being a money mule is a criminal offence.  They may approach you online, in person, on social medial or through fake job adverts asking to move money through your accounts.  They may tell you that you can keep some of the money as payment.  They may even ask you to open a bank account in your name for them to use.  This is a crime and by taking part even if you don’t where the money has come from or is going to, you are becoming a money mule.  This may result in your bank account being closed or a criminal conviction for money laundering.  Remember: Treat promises that you’ll receive money with suspicion.  Don’t allow money to be moved through your bank account.  Don’t open a bank account in your name for anyone.  Check that advertised jobs are legitimate.  Don’t accept friend request on social media from someone you don’t know.   Always keep your login details and cards in your possession.  Don’t let anyone use your account to accept or send payments.  Parents be aware:  Teenagers and young adults are often targeted by criminals who may be attracted by the promise of quick cash.   Protect your smartphone – be streetwise.    Dial *#06# and save a screenshot of your IMEI number.  Email the image to yourself.  Keep your phone locked and enable the PIN security and phone finder features.  Keep your phone out of view.  Don’t text or call while on the street.  With the weather improving be very careful of rip tides:  Swim between the red and yellow flags.  If you do get caught in a rip current, remain calm, swim parallel to the beach – if you can’t do this raise your arm and the lifeguard will come to assist you.  Log onto Hi Digital – the step by step course to learn some digital skills and it’s free.  Ring them on 1800203030.  There are classes available at the Adult Education Centre to learn how to use smart phones and also in beginners’ computers.  Ring 068 31198 to register for the classes beginning again in September. Tips for road safety; Never walk on the public road without a hi viz jacket.  Always face oncoming traffic. Tips to keep your home secure when you go away on holidays include asking a neighbour to take in your post and putting a car in your drive.  If you are travelling abroad for medical or cosmetic procedures, you should inform yourself of both the risks and benefits of any procedures and discuss the plans with your medical practitioner before committing to any procedure abroad.  If you are having a drink abroad, try to ensure drinks are poured from an original, sealed bottle. If I had they would have had access to my bank details.  Keep your security settings or security software up to date on your computer and change your passwords regularly.  Once you reach the age of 65 and live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out for long periods of the day then because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65.  The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €72.  Please note that this fee has increased by €6 and is payable in a lump sum each year after year one.  Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month payable from day one.  Committee members are Michael O’Kelly N.T., Seamus Stack, Mossie Gleeson, Kathleen Collins, Mary McArthur, John O’Sullivan, Billy Quirke N.T., Cllr. Francis Foley, Susan Daly, Catherine Daly, Marian Harnett.

BARNAGH TO ABBEYFEALE GREENWAY:  John Nelligan reminded me of this piece from The Independent 2021-07-02.

“After Barnagh, the next stop is Templeglantine, a welcoming village with a shop and hotel. The village is home to Holy Trinity Church, built in 1829 and one of the oldest churches still in use in the region. Just outside Templeglantine is Tullig Wood, a tranquil forest rich in native flora and fauna.

Take a rest underneath the oak and ash trees and watch out for the willow warblers and chiffchaffs that live in their branches. As the summer sets in, the forest is roofed by the leaves of native hardwood trees, like oak, ash, hazel, and birch, as well as imported trees like beech.

The natural surroundings of Tullig Wood soon give way to bustling Abbeyfeale, one of the most culturally unique towns in the region. As part of the Sliabh Luachra tradition, Abbeyfeale is a hub for Irish music and dance, and home to the Glórach Theatre and the annual Fleadh by the Feale festival. As the final town on the Limerick Greenway, it’s a great place to spend the night and take in a trad session at one of the many local pubs.”

LOUGH DERG PILGRIMAGES 2024:   A pilgrimage to Lough Derg is all about letting go, a time to see one’s daily life as it truly is. The Three Day Pilgrimage provides a kind of breathing space in which people can calmly explore and reflect on where they find themselves in their lives at that moment in time. Part of the spiritual benefits of any pilgrimage is learning to take nothing we have for granted. It is an opportunity to give thanks to God for having the health, the time, and the freedom to do the pilgrimage. It’s a moment to remember one’s loved ones at home and anyone who particularly asked for prayers, and also to say a prayer for fellow pilgrims. Lough Derg is a sacred place apart to bring burdens and leave them behind, to seek healing for wounds and to ask for them to be healed. These are just some of the reasons pilgrims continue to travel to the sacred Island. One Day Retreat. May: Sunday 12th, Tuesday 14th, Saturday 18th, Saturday 25th & Monday 27th. The Three Day Pilgrimage will commence on Thursday 1st June and continue until 15th August (Sunday 13th August is the final day for pilgrims to begin the Three Day Pilgrimage for 2023). Admission €80 | Booking advised | Concessions available for students, seniors and groups. 1. ITA’S HALL RENOVATION WORKS:The Management committee wish to advise that the Hall is now closed to the public until early February 2024 to allow for the refurbishment and upgrade of the Hall, recently funded under the Community Centres Investment fund.

LOCAL DAN PADDY ANDY FEST:  PRO Joe Harrington has been in touch to tell us about the annual Dan Paddy Andy festival:  “The August Bank Holiday Weekend will see the settlement of Lyreacrompane transformed into the dancing capital of Ireland – or, at least, of Kerry.  The 25th Dan Paddy Andy Festival will see seven bands heading that way.  The Festival committee is particularly excited that the rising star of Irish country music, Jack Keogh from Wicklow, is headed for the ‘Hooley in the Hills’. This will be Jack’s first appearance in the Kingdom and is expected to attract many of his rapidly growing fan base in the southwest of Ireland when he steps on to the stage on Sunday night, August 6.  The festival committee has issued a health warning in relation to the storytelling night on Thursday the 3rd, the first event in the festival. “The stories and humour of the Irish institution known as Seán O Sé could well induce body-damaging laughter”, Festival Secretary Kay O’Leary told us with a grin.  Sean, the ‘Puc ar Buille man’ will sing a few songs too as will the Listowel Balladeer, John Kinsella. Audience participation is encouraged. On Friday night the ‘Robins’ will surely come home when Paudie McAuliffe plays for the dancing in the marquee.

Saturday morning, August 5, the popular Bog Walk will be a chance to introduce young people to a unique environment and old skills and the older people will come along for the memories and for the ‘Tae in the Bog’. It is rumoured that the Green Party has agreed to look the other way on this occasion. The walkers will be back in time for the Kids party Club with Teresa and her puppets at 1.30pm.  The marquee will resound to the music of Heart and Soul that night.

The 5/10K-Walk/Run on Sunday morning offers a choice of terrain ranging from mass paths and woodland trails in the 5km to the category five climb at Collins Hill in the 10km. Apart from the medals for all, and the trophies and prize money to be won, the events provide the cleanest of mountain air in a most rural of settings.  Afternoon dancing with Eddie Lee and the Paudie Coffey Band (including a Waltzing Competition) follows. Later on Sunday night Mike Condon will warm people up for Jack Keogh in what promises to be a mighty occasion.

The weekend-long dancing fest concludes on Bank Holiday Monday with five hours of afternoon marquee dancing to the music of Bernie Heaney from Kildare followed by Ger Healy Rae, the Singing Jarvey.  Mike Fitzgerald will come along to sing the Festival song – ‘The Dan Paddy Andy Festival is here’ one more time – a song that has 290,000 hits on YouTube.”  There’s something there for everybody so make a note for the August Bank Holiday w/e and keep it local.

COMMUNITY ALERT SCAM ALERT:  Anti fraud gardai are advising people to make sure their smart phone access code is different to their online banking codes after it was found that criminals were watching people while they opened their phone, memorised the code, stole the phone and then accessed their bank accounts. Criminals are now focussing more on investment frauds as people are becoming less likely to fall for text or email scams or to click on links.  More than €10 million has been scammed from Irish people in online and investment frauds in the first five months of 2023.  Investment scams are where criminals create fake websites for investment products or clone real ones and lure potential investors largely through pop up ads online and social media.  Once a person makes contact they will be called by a fake ‘broker’ who lures the victim into either transferring funds directly, or downloading software onto their computer which can be used to drain bank a/cs.  Between January 1 2020 and May 31, 2023 €43.6 million was reported as stolen from victims’ bank accounts in different types of frauds.   Another few scams.  If you get a call from someone you don’t know and they say “Can you hear me” do not reply “Yes” Say “I can hear you”.  It seems they can use a recording of your “Yes” to sign you up for all kinds of stuff. If you get a text mar ya from one of your children that reads like this; “Hi Mam, my phone is broken, this is my new mobile number.  You can save this number and delete my old one” – Ignore and Delete.  Be careful about calls from Amazon Prime, if you signed up for a free month’s trial, at the end of it the scammers could ring you up and ask you if you want to sign up or cancel.  If you decide you want to sign up and it’s a scammer you’re dealing with they’ll be able to get your credit card details.  Ignore text messages about you supposedly passing through the tunnel and not paying.  If you don’t recognise the number don’t answer the phone, let them leave a message and then ring them back if you feel you need to. Keep your doors locked so that if you answer someone at the front door there is no danger of an accomplice coming in the back door while your attention is diverted. Banks never ask you to click onto a link – it’s either a y or a n that they require. That’s how the scammers work- put on the pressure and someone will surely fall for it. FAST is the checklist for a stroke.  Face – Check to see if one side of the face droops, Arms – Raise both arms, see if one drops down. Speech- check for slurring.  Time – if the answer to these is yes call 112/999 immediately. Five ways to Wellbeing:  Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning.  Give.  www. mentalhealth Ireland.ie    .  Ask your relatives and neighbours for help if you need it. Keep their phone numbers on a list beside your phone.  Learn your Eircode – if you have to call for help it will take the services straight to your door.  Write ICE before your next of kin’s number in your phone so if you cannot communicate the services will be able to contact your next of kin.  If you suffer from a gambling addiction there is a counsellor/psychotherapist available at the Listowel Family Resource Centre.  Further information from 068 23584. If you are 65, you live alone or with a person/s aged over 65 you are entitled to receive a monitored alarm system. But if you have younger people living in the house who are out or if you spend long periods of the day on your own then,  because you are spending hours alone you are also entitled to the system provided that you are over 65.  The free equipment is provided by Pobal following an application from Abbeyfeale Community Alert, there will be a monitoring fee to be paid from the second year of installation to the installing company of €72.  There may be some confusion over the word free –  the equipment which costs in the region of €400 is provided free of charge by Pobal as is the first year of monitoring but after that you will be charged by the installing company for the monitoring.  I have not included the phone numbers of the committee in this notice but if you want to get a panic button then ring Abbeyfeale Garda Station on 068 30010 and they will contact one of us. Should you not have a landline the installing company Task provide a sim card at a rate of €7.50 per month payable from day one with a deposit of 6 months payable on the day of installation.  Then, in year two you will also receive a bill for the monitoring fee so in year one the bill will be €90 and in year two and every other year after it will €162 approx. If you wish, you can arrange a direct debit and pay this amount off monthly.    Committee members are Michael O’Kelly N.T., Chairman Seamus Stack, Secretary Mossie Gleeson, Assistant Treasurer Kathleen Collins, Assistant Secretary Mary McArthur, John O’Sullivan, Billy Quirke N.T., Cllr. Francis Foley, Catherine Daly, Maurice O’Connell, Assistant Treasurer Marian Harnett.
