‘Congrats All Around’

Well there were ‘double celebrations’ in the Mary & Denny Mulvihill household last week when they became grandparents twice in a matter of a couple of days! Their son Jonathan and his partner Linda Hayes in Newcastle West were blessed with their new baby John-Alan, a little brother for Mikey and also their son Conor and his partner Jane Wrenn in the USA were blessed with their first baby, a little girl they are naming Saoirse. Congrats and good wishes to the proud parents and grandparents.

There were also big celebrations in the Scanlon house on Friday when Anna, daughter of Margaret and Tim prepared for her wedding. The wedding of Anna to Tom Tyrrell took place here in Athea Church and the Nuptial Ceremony was performed by Fr. Michael Cussen P.P. The bride was assisted by her sisters Denise and Jenny, who was home from America for the happy occasion. The best man was Brian Tyrrell and the groomsman was Colin Byrne. The reception was held at The Ballygarry Hotel in Tralee where everyone had a great day. Congrats to the newly weds and best wishes to them for their future happiness.

Another celebratory event this weekend was the 30th birthday of John Geoghegan, son of Eibhlís and Leo of Dalton Street, who held his party at the Top of the Town. A great night was enjoyed by family, relatives and many friends.

Well ladies, in the next couple of weeks, you might go through your wardrobes and if you have any good condition dresses, handbags, hats or shoes that you no longer wear or need they would be gratefully accepted. Bank of Ireland, Listowel on August 25th at 6.30pm will be holding a sale of all the items donated. All the money raised will be going to “The Make a Wish Foundation” (which will be making a wish come true for a terminally ill child). All items will be sold at greatly reduced prices with some designer items already handed in. Every dress or item handed in will be a great help and everyone is welcome to come along to the sale and maybe get a great bargain or two. You can hand in any items for the Bank sale to me at your convenience. By doing so you are helping “to make a wish come true” for a very sick child.

Knockdown News-27/07/2016

By Peg Prendeville

Seven months of the year gone already and apart from a few lovely days here and there we have had no stretch of summer days. Same old story every year. Still we are lucky to be living where we are, in relative peace, compared to many places in the world at this time.

There is very little happening in the area so I include a little poem to cheer up your hearts. Remember Lucy, my grandchild, who was born with spina bifida and was told she would not be able to walk as she was paralysed from the waist down. For a long time she was very immobile but, through private physiotherapy in First Step Therapy in Patrickswell, Lucy has good news for us as follows:

“Dear Mammy, I’ve something to tell you

And I know you’ll be filled with delight

When you hear that I took a few steps today

With my walking frame to keep me upright.

Yes, I know it has taken me such a long time

For now I am three and a bit

But you know the obstacles I overcame

To get me up on my feet.

Remember all the drives to the physio

You used to sing all the while

And I did my best to lift up my legs

While you coaxed me on with a smile.

At first I could do nothing at all

But Bart was so patient with me

And little by little I could move a bit

While he counted one, two and three.

Oh sometimes I was sick of it all

And maybe a bit of a coward

But Nana and you dried up my tears

As you hoped I would get my reward.

I know I’ll not be an athlete

But who knows? Maybe I will!

And maybe I’ll walk up the aisle one day

And give you all such a big thrill.

So goodnight now Mammy and thank you

For your part in helping me walk

I’m so blessed with all of my talents

I can laugh, I can sing, I can talk.”
