Thank you

The Brothers of Charity West Limerick Services would sincerely like to thank all those who helped in any way in our recent 4th annual charity cycle. At the Brothers of Charity Services, Newcastle West, we provide day and residential services for adults with an Intellectual Disability in West Limerick. We currently provide services for 75 people and their families. To those who cycled, bucket collected, sponsored food and water, as well as those who contributed to our collection, we wish to say thanks for your continued support.

Congratulations to Athea Tidy Towns

A Chairde,

I would like to wish the committee and members for Athea Tidy Towns best of luck with their Fundraising Fashion Show in the Con Colbert Memorial Hall this weekend.

As I was driving through Athea this past week it is fantastic to see strong community involvement and dedication.  The flower beds on all incoming roads are wonderful and extremely welcoming to visitors to the area. The intricate painting on the main street is an incredible exhibition of tradition, talent and achievements within the parish.

All this hard work has been well reflected within the recent Tidy Towns Competition results. Congratulations on your Endeavour Award and the increase on your points this year. I have no doubt you will again increase your points next year.

Once again congratulations on your wonderful achievement and I hope that you have a successful Fashion Show this weekend.

 Martin Ferris TD

Kathleen’s Corner-25/09/13

Congrats and good wishes are extended to Stephen O’Connor (son of Margaret & Mike – Upper Athea) who travelled the long journey home from Australia recently to wed his fiancée Jackie Vaughan (daughter of Rachel & James Vaughan of Moyvane). A great day was enjoyed by family, relations and friends at the Ballygarry House Hotel in Tralee. We wish the newlyweds a safe journey back to Australia.

There are just a couple of tickets left for the fashion show in aid of the Tidy Towns on this Sat Sept 25th. Rose in Brouder’s Shop has the last remaining few and it promises to be a great enjoyable night with all local models and much more!

Thanks are extended to everyone who came along to the fund-raising Coffee Morning on Thursday last in aid of Milford Hospice. The great sum of €1,100 was donated. Well done as always to the wonderful “baking ladies” who as always had a mouth-watering selection of cakes, buns etc. “Eat your heart out” – Rachel Allen!

Well this weekend sees Athea National School holding its annual Church gate collection. If you have children attending Athea N.S. you are asked to give as generously as possible, or indeed if you have grandkids attending or if you have attended the school yourself at some stage you might like to give a little. Great work has been done in the school over the summer holidays and it’s looking really well now, with the new windows and freshly painted.

The Athea Ladies Football Club wish to send good wishes and a very speedy recovery to young Sarah O’Connor (daughter of David and Jacqueline of Coole) who is now recovering at home after her operation in Cork. No doubt she will be back “on the playing field” very soon. Well done also to Ciana Murphy of Lower Athea, who was privileged to play at half time in Croke Park on Sunday last – in the mini sevens. She played on the Dublin team and was chosen from her school, well done. Unfortunately for all those loyal supporters with Mayo connections in the parish that they didn’t win on Sunday – however Joe Stapleton’s girls are first cousins of Bernard Brogans so at least there is an Athea connection and no doubt they are very proud of the Dublin win! Here’s to the next time for Mayo!

Following a recent survey it was proved that parents who read to their children up to the age of 7 instil into them the love of reading and helps them to use their imagination. Forget the computer games, etc and latch on to a book, as the saying goes – “A house without books – is like a house without windows”…

Knockdown News-25/09/13

Knockdown was buzzing on last Sunday with the Knockdown Vintage display. This is the 3rd time that the combination of Killeaney AFC and Knockdown Vintage have organised the event. The sunny weather added to the enjoyment of the day and all had a good time.

Sunday was so good that I took a trip to Ballybunion for a few hours. There were many people walking and some enjoying a swim, Surfing is becoming very popular there and the waves were just right for the enthusiasts. It was beautiful there considering it is almost the end of September. The fine weather keeps us all in good mood.

Glin Library is back in action again this week. There is an interesting display of old photos of Glin Industrial School which were donated recently. Sadly the Reconciliation Mass and the reunion of the Industrial School pupils has been moved to Raheen from Glin on the 19th October.

Best wishes to Pauline Sharp, Glenbawn on her upcoming exhibition of Equine, Canine and Feline artworks aptly entitled “Of the N’ines” at Newcastle West Library, Gortboy, Newcastle West, from Thursday 26th September until Saturday 19th October. Opening hours;- Mon, Wed, Thurs and Saturday: 10.30-5pm, Tuesday and Friday:10.30-8pm. Since Pauline has come to live in our parish her talent as an artist has blossomed and bloomed. This new exhibition contains a lot of new work, not yet exhibited anywhere. Do visit Newcastle West library anytime before October the 19th to appreciate her talent.

It looks like The National Ploughing championship is being blessed with good weather this year. This annual event always draws a crowd.
