Adult Ladies League Division 2 Round 3

Well done to our adult team who made the long trip to Murroe last Wednesday night to take on the home side. Athea got off to the perfect start and opened the scoring in the first minute. It was end to end stuff with both sides taking their chances. Athea capitalised  taking some well taken goals and led at the break 3.6 to 10 pts. Despite a resurgence from Murroe / Boher in the second half the Athea backs held strong and it finished 4.6 to 16 pts.

This was very much a young side who stood strong against the intermediate finalists of last year.

Knockdown News – 7/5/24

by Peg Prendeville

Due to popular demand and after four very successful nights in Ballyhahill The Abha Bhán Players will, once again, stage a TOMB WITH A VIEW by Norman Robbins. This time it will be in The Glórach in Abbeyfeale on Saturday 25th May at 8pm. Bookings advised and to be made on 0871383940. Admission €15. Raffle on the night.

Sincere sympathy to Mary Ambrose, Tenekilla and her family on the death of her husband Pat last week. Pat had been unwell for a while. A huge crowd attended both the removal and the funeral Mass which was held on Monday last. May he rest in peace.

Many of you will have heard of Santiago de Compostela which is a place of pilgrimage in Spain. In recent years it has become popular to “do the Camino” which is to walk a distance to Compostela. I believe the whole long route is over 600k but it is more usual to walk the final 120k over 5 days. For a fit person it sounds like a great adventure in a sunny land. Rita O’Hagan, nee Enright from Clounleharde, is just back having walked the 100k from Sarria in Spain to the Cathedral in Compostela where it is believed the apostle St James (SanTiago) is buried. Rita is a great sun worshipper and was looking forward to a few lovely days bonding with her daughter Aoife. Well she accomplished her task and is back home in Dublin but informs me that it rained every single day. So she had to ditch the sunhat and take out the umbrella and raincape. They often had to stop and squeeze the water out of their socks such were the downpours. But, undaunted and with smiles on their faces the got to their destination. She was never more relieved than when she touched down on Irish soil again – rain or no rain. Well done Rita and Aoife. It was a true pilgrimage. Photo beneath. Rita’s husband, Brian O’Hagan, is a great adventurer also and some years ago sailed across the Atlantic with some friends. I wish them well in their future schemes and dreams.

I am enjoying hearing the cuckoo in Glenbawn. We can pretend it is summer even if the weather does not oblige.

Cabinet of Curiosities

When All the English Had Tails

Where did the myth that English men (and probably women) were hiding tails beneath their clothing come from? And what was that about eggs?

“Tails, tails!” That was the taunt the people of Paris flung at the English army in 1436 as the soldiers vacated the city that they had occupied for sixteen years.

MRS. O’HERN’S FUNERAL.

Held From St. Bonaventure’s Church, Allegany, This Morning. This morning from St. Bonaventure’s church, Allegany, occurred the funeral of the late Mrs. Ellen O’Hern, widow of the late Patrick O’Hern of this city. The solemn requiem mass was celebrated at 10 o’clock, the Very Rev. T. F. Hickey, vicar general of the diocese of Rochester, preaching the sermon. Burial was made in the Catholic cemetery near the church.

Yesterday the solemn requiem high mass was celebrated at St. Elizabeth’s church, South Sharon, by her four sons, assisted by the neighbouring clergy. Her six sons acted as pall bearers. The church

was filled by sorrowing relatives and friends. In his sermon today at St. Bonaventure’s church Father Hickey said: “Mr. and Mrs. O’Hern were among the pioneers, who by labour and money assisted materially in erecting the first buildings of St. Bonaventure’s college, in which later their first son was raised to the holy priesthood. It is worthy of note that the early priests of St. Bonaventure’s, among whom were the present apostolic delegate, Most Rev. Dionide Folconio, were frequent visitors at the O’Hern home. Mrs. O’Hern had a great love for this church and for the Franciscan Fathers and for upwards of fifty years was a devoted member of the Third Order of St. Francis.”

“Christmas 1904, her third son was ordained priest by Rt. Rev. B. J. McQuaid at Rochester. On the following day she had the peculiar happiness of witnessing solemn high mass at St. Patrick’s cathedral, celebrated by her four sons and two nephews of the same name, Rev. Maurice and William O’Hern.” At this time Very Rev. Father Hickey spoke most eloquently of her queenly place among women, as the mother of three priests and a fourth one near ordination.

“Such is the life of one of God’s choicest women. Always humble, unassuming and kind towards everyone, she had a solid faith and piety that made her brave any and every sacrifice for the sake of her religion. Though mother of so many vocations, she was never known by a single word to influence any of her children in making a choice in life. Her part was prayer and example, the rest she left to God.”

Mrs. O’Hern was a remarkable woman in many ways. She was born at Duagh, county Kerry, Ireland. In the year 1839, her maiden name being Ellen Casey. She came to this country in the year 1850, when 11 years old. In June, 1857, she was married to her late husband at Cuba, N. Y.

PRAYER OF ST. BRENDAN

Help me to journey beyond the familiar and into the unknown. Give me the faith to leave old ways and break fresh ground with You. Christ of the mysteries, I trust You to be stronger than each storm within me. I will trust in the darkness and know that my times, even now, are in Your hand. Tune my spirit to the music of heaven, and somehow, make my obedience count for You. AMEN.

Rabies in West Cork 1885-1894

The one good news story here is that a young McCarthy girl from the Skibbereen District was bitten by a rabid dog. She went to Paris to be treated by Dr. Pasteur at public expense and made a full recovery.
