Moore’s Bar Carrigkerry is under new management since Monday September 21. We welcome Pa Quaid, Carrigkerry and Joan Kelly Knocknagoshel and wish them well in their new venture. We thank Seamus, and Louise Culhane and staff who have provided a fine service over the past eleven plus years. Moore’s Bar has served the locality for well over one hundred years and is the only bar in the village at present. It is renowned for its friendly and homely atmosphere and competitive prices. It will continue to cater for parties and special occasions and there will be live music every weekend.

Fr Tim Curtin, the new administrator of Ardagh/Carrigkerry parish, has taken up his duties. He introduced himself to his new parishioners at Ardagh and Carrigkerry churches over the weekend of September 19/20. He will have a busy schedule overseeing four churches, four schools and Cahermoyle Nursing Home as well as additional commitments. We wish him health and happiness as he carries out his duties. 

Congratulations to Aoife King, daughter of Helen and Pat, Carrigkerry, who is the Desmond Credit Union 2015 Bursary Award recipient.  Aoife is a former student of Desmond College, Newcastle West and is currently in third level education in NUIG.

“The Hills of Old Kilcolman” the Irish Traditional Music Album” from Jacki, and John O’Connor, Kilcolman, was launched on home turf on Friday night last in the Flag Floor, Glensharrold as their mother’s people came from the same townland. A large crowd was present and enjoyed a good night’s music song, dance and storytelling. The other launch nights for the album are, Friday 2^nd October the Devon Inn Hotel, Templeglantine and Saturday 11^th October in Killoscully Community Centre, Killoscully, Co. Tipperary.  There is an open invitation to all to come along to the Launch nights and enjoy some West Limerick traditional music and song. This album is currently for sale at Moloney’s Daybreak, Carrigkerry; Curley’s Post Office and Shop, Ardagh; Buckley’s Shop, Devon Road, Templeglantine; The Ramble Inn, Abbeyfeale; Mullane’s Costcutter, Shanagolden; MACE, Shanagolden; Trade Electric, Newcastle West and O’Connor’s Londis, Churchtown, Newcastle West. Net proceeds in aid of Milford Hospice, Limerick. All support greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to Aileen Nix whose art exhibition ‘’Residue’’ opened at the Red Door Gallery, Newcastle West on Friday, September 19. The official opening was performed by Anne Culhane, Limerick School of Art and Design. Aileen is a member of the Sheedy family from Rooskagh and best wishes are extended  to her in her future work.

We extend our sympathy to Mike and Mary Nestor, Coolcappa on the death of Mike’s sister Kathleen Kelly, late of Limerick. May she rest in Peace.

On behalf of the children of Coolcappa National School and Concern, we would like to thank everyone that supported our coffee morning on Sunday, September 13 in Coolcappa Hall. Thank you to all who helped out by baking and helping with the morning, but most of all thank you as always to the people of Coolcappa/Kilcolman who came and supported this good cause as they continue to do so for every fundraiser. We are very happy to let you know that we raised €770 which has been sent to Concern Syria.

Sive by John B Keane was performed by the Shoestring Theatre Company in the Schoolyard Theatre, Charleville, last weekend. The cast included Gerard Liston and Eilish Casey founding members of Ardagh Drama Group in 1992. The play will be staged there each weekend during the month of October and is well worth a visit

Saint Kieran’s defeated Newcastle West by 1-16 to 1-9 in the Limerick County Intermediate Hurling Cup semi-final at Mick Neville Park on Tuesday, September 22. They will meet Knockaderry who defeated Hospital-Herbertstown by 1-22 to 2-18 in the other semi-final.

Saint Kieran’s defeated Oola by 1-10 to 0-7 in the County U-16 Football Division 2 semi-final at Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale on Saturday, September 19. They will meet Deel Rangers who defeated Galbally by 3-6 to 2-7 in the other semi-final.

Congratulations to all the local players and mentors involved with Newcastle West, Camogie club who defeated Crecora by 2-8 to 1-1 in the County U-16 A Championship Final at Croagh, on Friday September 18.

Carrig Celtic lost 1-0 away to Broadford Utd in Round 1 of the Munster Junior Cup on Sunday, September 20. Old Mill lost 3-1 at home after extra time to Ballingarry B in Round 1 of the Richard Hogan Cup. James Morrisroe scored their goal. Creeves Celtic lost 3-1 away to Ballysteen in Round 2 and Carrig Celtic B lost 4-3 away to Granagh Utd in the same competition.

The weekly card game at the Flag Floor Glensharrold resumed on Wednesday September 23rd  at 9pm. Tea will be served and all are welcome. The weekly card game resumed in Ardagh Hall on Tuesday, September 29th at 9pm. The proceeds will go towards the upkeep of the hall. All support is needed and will be appreciated by the committee.

West Limerick Community Radio is running a Level 3 FETAC/QQI Course for members of the elderly community aged over 55. Over 10 classes get to grips with how the media works and get involved in radio that makes a difference. This new short course is aimed at people over 55 years of age with an interest in community issues or current affairs. In a fun and friendly atmosphere you’ll explore how radio and TV shapes the world we live in. In a group you’ll help make a radio programme you’d like to listen to on the things, big and small, that matter to you. The programme will be broadcast as part of a national series all over Ireland. With the help of the Community Foundation for Ireland, there’s no charge but spaces are limited. Participants will gain a QQI/FETAC Level 3 accredited qualification. West Limerick Resources will be offering an evening workshop on social enterprise on Thursday October 1st to help promote the positive development of community and social enterprise in West Limerick. Workshop Aims: to identify  the potential  to  develop  community and  social  enterprises  to  provide needed community services and supports in your community area. to encourage communities to undertake needs analysis in their local area and identify the potential for social and community enterprise projects to meet a need within the community to provide an overview of the potential supports available for setting up social enterprise projects in West Limerick The workshop is free of charge and open to all, especially local Community and Voluntary organisations e.g. community councils, development associations, tidy town groups, disability, youth organisations etc. It will take place in the Desmond Complex, Newcastle West, starting at 7pm and will be facilitated by Tom O Leary of O’Leary & Associates, who has over 15 years’ experience in developing and advising social enterprise projects. Newcastle West Film Club will present the first film of the current season ,the Academy Award winning, Still Alice in the Desmond Complex Newcastle West on this Friday October 2, at 8pm.  The film club was set up in 2008 and they show six films (one per month) over the winter months plus a Bealtaine screening in May. It is a lovely social occasion with people of all ages attending the comfortable venue. Refreshments available and the cost is €7 per screening.

Gala West Limerick Fashion Show in aid of invalid section of Limerick Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes will be held in Devon Inn Hotel, Templeglantine on Wednesday 7th October. Cheese and wine reception. Show starts @ 8.00pm. Lots of valuable prizes. Tickets €10 available from committee or at the door.
