MUSIC: Handed Down presentation on Saturday, February 18th  at Scartaglin at 8pm. Remembering  Julia Clifford and her sister Bridgie Kelliher.

BRIGID: In 480AD or thereabouts St. Brigid founded a monastery in Kildare in the shade of an old oak tree on the site of an earlier pagan shrine to the goddess Brigid. The name in Irish Cill Dara, meaning the ‘the church of the oak’, gave both the town and the county its name.  She was joined initially by seven female followers and this is seen as the first religious community of women in Ireland, with the saint as the first Abbess.  The monastery thrived for many hundreds of years and became a rich centre of learning.  Brigid also founded an art school that included metalwork and illumination and which created the legendary illuminated manuscript the Book of Kildare –‘…the work of angelic and not human skill’. Sadly the Book disappeared during the Reformation in the mid 1500s.  Maybe someday it will turn up again..!  St. Brigid was also famed for her skill with cows, sheep and pigs, a gift she inherited from her mother. She also supposedly had the gift of turning water into beer – useful in any century!

Joan’s impressive Golf drive from Moyvane 2000.

(Break)

What a way to start the new year! Joan won this wonderful prize in the Moyvane 2000 draw, definitely the most attractive draw I’ve heard about in a long time.

You see, the Moyvane people have realised what many other committees and fund-raisers should have learned by now: bottles of whiskey and tins of biscuits are all very fine, but when it comes to coaxing people to part with their hard-earned cash, there’s nothing quite as attractive as a chance of winning a car or a large wad of cash.

Anne Marie Kennelly of the Moyvane 2000 committee tells me that their draw will run every month up to and including October, and the mouth-watering array of prizes includes a Volkswagen Polo, a Toyota Yaris, a Renault Clio and the top prize, which is a Suzuki two-litre turbo diesel, is probably worth a frightening amount of money.

There’s an attractive number of prizes up for grabs every month — the March prizes, for instance, include £5,000 in cash or a Honda quad. In total, there are 13 prizes to be won every month.

Anne Marie also tells me that one of the January prizes of £500 in cash went to a winner in Falkirk in Scotland, so it’s obviously attracting quite a lot of interest. The committee hope to eventually raise £75,000 to build a community hall in Moyvane — more about that next week.

If you’d like to be in with a chance of winning one of these prizes, the good news is that there’s a limited number of tickets available. Give Anne Marie a call on (068) 49351 or mobile (087) 8555639.

And by the way, happy motoring to Joan Buckley in her new Golf!

TV crew filming Last Light of the millennium

Thought you’d heard the last about Listowel’s millennium ceremony, but as I found out this week, it was actually local man Dillon Boyer behind the camera.

Dillon took it upon himself to film the prayer service in the Church; the ‘Last light’ ceremony in The Square on the afternoon of new year’s eve; the wrenboy concert in The Square that night, and the fireworks display at midnight.

He also got up at the crack of dawn to film the first sunlight of the 21st century coming up over Cnoc an Fhomhair. There’s a man with initiative. Anyone who missed all the celebrations — and I believe quite a few people were in bed with the ‘flu — might like to buy a copy of Dillon’s video, which can be purchased from either McKenna’s or Danny Hannon’s. If you’d like to see a sneak preview, stroll by McKenna’s some time and watch it on one of the display televisions. Copies can also be bought by calling Dillon on (068) 22182.

When he’s not out capturing moments of history for posterity on video, Dillon tells me he’s busy working on the Great Book of Kerry project with Sean Quinlan from Ballyduff.

Armed Assault:- While standing at the corner of the village street in Athea singing the “Soldiers’ Song” and “Wrap the Green Flag round me”, a group of boys were attacked by two R.I.C. men.  The police gave no warning of their attack.  One boy was badly wounded under the right eye, and his face bruised and battered.  Several other boys received nasty wounds.  The two who received the most severe injuries did not belong to the group of vocalists.
