RTE Documentary Seeks Weather Footage from 2014
Have you a weather story to tell? Did being caught in the rain shower result in you meeting someone new or did a recent weather event change you or your community? RTE is looking for footage and stories about how the weather impacted your life for better or worse in 2014. From the winter storms that lashed the country to the great summer we have just had. RTE is looking for your videos of the year as it happened. They are looking for the human story behind the headlines and to show the sometimes dramatic and often unexpected impact of Ireland’s weather on our lives. The programme will be broadcast in December and will be presented by John Creedon. An Evening with Donncha O’Dulaing
Come along and enjoy an evening with Donncha O’Dulaing at Knockfierna Rambling House on Friday, October 31st at 7.30pm. This promises to be an evening of music, song and storytelling . All are welcome.
Irish Night
A fundraising night in aid of the Seanie Geoghegan Fund, Rooskagh, will take place in the Flag Floor Rambling House, Carrigkerry on Friday 24th October at 9.30pm. A great evening’s entertainment with music, song, dance and storytelling. Tea and refreshments will also be available. Your support would be greatly appreciated for this worthy cause.
Shoe Boxes
The Christmas Shoebox Appeal by Hope will be taken up in November, so prepare now. Since this campaign began they have delivered 2.8 million boxes.
They are for the forgotten children, victims of war, disease and poverty in some of the poorest countries in the world. For families living on less than €1 per day, Christmas is just another ordinary day, nothing special, no Christmas tree, no presents but your shoebox will bring a little hope, a lot of laughter and smiles for children who have very little. Use the four W’s as a rough guide to fill the box. Writing: pens, paper, colouring books. Washing: Toothpaste, soap, toothbrush, facecloth, brush. Wearing: Hat, socks, gloves, scarf, underwear. Wow: A treat, sweets, small game, toys or small book. Wrap the box and lid separately in Christmas paper and include €4 for postage.
Nursing Award
Limerick Public Health Nurse, Bernie Long, was named the “Public Health Nurse” of the year at the recent seventh annual Baby Elegance Maternity and Infant Awards. Bernie received the award for going above and beyond for the families she cares for. Hosted by TV3’s Sybil Mulcahy and Martin King in Dublin, the awards recognize inspirational people and outstanding childcare service providers, as well as commending the very best products and services for parents and small children in Ireland. Bernie attends the Health Clinic here in Athea a few days a week. She is a wonderful person, kind, gentle and extremely helpful. Congratulations to Bernie and well done to her for achieving this award and continued success in her nursing career for many years.
The Late Murt Downes
Huge crowds attended the removal and burial of one of Limerick’s best known and best loved country music star Murt Downes in his native Knockaderry last week. Murt was entertaining people at a very young age and established his name and set up his own band The Rotation Showband where he played at dance halls, weddings, socials, fundraisers and get-togethers. Murt travelled to Nashville, Tennessee where he recorded a three track record. Murt always regarded it as the highlight of his life. Musicians paid their own tribute to him at his funeral Mass and graveside and his nephew Ger Downes spoke of his good humour and commitment to music. Sympathy is extended to his sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
