Sincere sympathies to the Culhane family on the death of Dan Culhane, Killeaney last week. Also to the O’Sullivan family on the death of Pat O’Sullivan, Turraree. May the rest in peace and may their families find comfort.

It is often said the we in Ireland deal well with death. And I agree. Grieving families are well supported, as much as possible, by neighbours and friends who all rally around to help. My English friends are afraid to face it and shy away from mentioning it and avoid funeral parlours if they can while we face it head on and do the best we can to make it easy for those who mourn. After all it is the one thing that we are all guaranteed to experience at some time. That’s not saying it is pleasant, of course.

The AGM of the Abha Bhán Drama Players will take place in the Parish Hall on Thursday February 8 at 7.30 pm. All members are encouraged to attend. Meanwhile rehearsals continue for those involved in “A Tomb with a View”. It is hoped to stage this in April.

Next week sees the start of Lent with Ash Wednesday on February 14. But that is also St Valentine’s Day when all those romantics among us want to celebrate. Now theres’ a dilemma!

Valentine’s Day on the first of Lent

Will put a spanner in the works

How can one fast and still celebrate

And push away that box of chocs?

Meanwhile this week is threatened with snow! And as I write the rain is pelting down again.
