It is sad to hear that Nora Lynch of Glasha has passed away so close to Christmas. Nora, in her 104th year, was living in her own house and able to move about until very recently. She was fondly looked after by her son Jim and family next door as well as her son John and daughter Hannah, all of whom will miss her company and humour. May she rest in peace.

A very entertaining night was held in Ballyhahill last Wednesday night at the monthly Rambling House. Over 120 people attended not counting the Loughill Junior Wrenboys who paid a visit and entertained all with music, song and dance. This group, coached by Mike Walsh, will carry on the tradition for many years yet. Santa and Mrs Claus paid a surprise visit with lucky bags for them all. The entertainment all night was top notch as was the elaborate supper laid on by the Parish Hall committee. Well done to them all and may it go from strength to strength in 2024.

The Community singing which takes place in Glin Library on Tuesdays under the direction of Bernie Hayes is another local success. There are scarcely enough chairs for all who turn up. Group singing is proven to be very therapeutic so it is a success all round.

We are into the final days before Christmas so I want to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and Healthy New Year. Thanks and best wishes to Domhnall De Barra who continues to keep this newsletter going from year to year. It must be over twenty five years now. I include an extract from the Knockdown News 21 years ago re safety in the home at Christmas.

“Thomas McCarthy , Fire Officer in Foynes spoke to a group in Ballyhahill  about the dangers of fires in the home. A few tips to be aware of at Christmas.

Do not have TV, video and Fairy lights plugged into a double adaptor. It is lethal. Overloaded. Use fused plug board.

Do not put the crib on top of the TV. Can get too hot and go on fire.

Do not have fairy lights near curtains as they can get hot enough to burn.

A TV in a steamy kitchen is not a good idea.

Beware of leaving on TV when there is nobody in the house. Too dangerous.

ALWAYS unplug everything at night except fridge and radio-clock.

Do not let children near matches

Not wise to have a mirror over a fire, for fear of clothes catching fire while leaning in over it.

These are not my suggestions but those of a professional fireman who has had years of experience in dealing with fires, including fatalities. Electric blankets were another thing to be wary of. If you need to use them keep them on the bed always. Do not fold them away for the summer, he said. So be sensible and be safe.”

Happy Christmas and New Year to all. See you in 2024!
