JOAN AHERNE: The death has taken place of Joan Aherne ( Nee Larkin ) School Road, Carrigkerry, peacefully at University Hospital Limerick on Tuesday October 24. Reposing was held  at Riedy’s Funeral Home Newcastle West on  Thursday October  26, from 6pm to 8pm. The funeral cortege arrived  at St Mary’s Carrigkerry Church on Friday morning for 11.30am Requiem Mass. It was Concelebrated by F r Michael Noonan  and Canon Tony Mullins. Family members participated in the ceremony with readings, prayers of the faithful, offertory and Eulogy. Symbols of importance to Mary’s life were taken to the Altar before mass commenced. They included her Rosary beads and holy water from Knock, where she made many trips over the years. Two Family photographs,  showing her love for family members including 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. baking dish make up, bouquet of flowers , etc.  to mark her life as a homemaker who enjoyed  her style and outings .The first reading was from the Book of Ecclesiastes and the second  from the letter of  St Paul to the Romans,  very appropriate for Mary. Fr Michael paid his own tribute to Joan who was a regular Mass attendee. Nicole as a tribute sang Lady of Knock.  Daughter Joanne delivered a glowing and loving eulogy tracing Joan’s path through life. Describing her as a hard worker, who liked her dancing, style, travel, and making family occasions special.

She was born in 1940 in Barnagh and attended Monagea school. She met her husband Jim at a dance in the Riverside Ballroom in Athea where she enjoyed  her jiving and other dances. They were married in Monagea Church in 1968 and held their Reception in the Shannon Arms Hotel in Limerick.  They spent 55 years together enjoying many road trips and family celebrations. As her coffin departed Fiona sang a very appropriate song made famous by Big Tom ”Going out the same way as you came in”. Joan was laid to rest  afterwards in Calvary Cemetery Newcastle West. Sympathy to  her husband Jim, daughters Sandra, Martina, Patricia, Joanne, sister Ann, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sons-in-law, nephews and nieces, relatives and friends.  Joan will be missed  by all who knew her but especially by her family. She was a real lady and we will retain lovely memories  of her from her times attending Stack’s and Moran’s in Carrigkerry. May she rest in Peace.

JOHN LANE: The death has taken place of John Lane, Clare House, Kilcolman, Co. Limerick on Thursday  October 19, peacefully at University Hospital Limerick. Reposing  was held at Riedy’s Funeral Home, Newcastle West on Monday, October 23, from 6.30pm with removal at 8pm to St Molua’s Church Kilcolman. His Requiem Mass was Concelebrated by Fr Tim Curtin and Fr Denis Mullane on Tuesday at 12 noon. Family members participated in the ceremony, including a tribute  to John who was aged 78 years and a member of the farming community. His death was unexpected after a short stay in hospital. His great passion in life was farming and taking care of his animals. He was a highly regarded member of the community, being a good neighbour and friend to many over the years.

Following Kilcolman National School he attended Pallaskenry Agriculture College and commenced his love for farming on the family farm. He was very forward thinking and was constantly up skilling  in agriculture affairs with night classes, courses, travel and further schooling leading to a Diploma. He travelled to foreign countries to check out new methods in farming and was progressive and ahead of his time. John enjoyed attending Listowel and Galway Races, National Ploughing Championship, and following Limerick hurlers. John was laid to rest afterwards in Kilcolman cemetery. Sympathy to his  sisters Mary Dooley and Esther, brother Maurice, sister-in-law Maura, nephews Patrick, Thomas and Alan, nieces Marie and Marguerita, grandnephew Culann, relatives and friends. May he rest in Peace.

SYMPATHY: We extend sympathy to John Doyle and family Carrigkerry on the death of his father James (Jim ) Doyle, Woodside House, Hackettstown, Co. Carlow and formerly  of Kyle  Ballymurphy, Carlow,  peacefully at Baltinglass Hospital on Wednesday October 18.  Reposing  took place in Halligan’s Funeral Home on Thursday, and Requiem Mass in St Brigid’s Church Hackettstown  on Friday at 12 noon followed by burial in the local cemetery. Sympathy also to Jim’s wife Joan, daughter Sinead, other sons Colin, Garrett, Ronan and Pierce, and all other family members. May he Rest in Peace.

ALL SOULS: Mass will be celebrated in St Kyran’s Church Coolcappa  on Thursday November 2, ( All Souls commemoration of the Faithful Departed) at 9.30am and in St Molua’s Church Ardagh at 12.30pm instead of 11.30am.

MILFORD HOSPICE: A church gate collection in aid of Milford Hospice will be held in Ardagh/ Carrigkerry on this Saturday/Sunday November 4/5 and your support will be greatly appreciated.

ALL IRELAND WHEELCHAIR TITLE: Congratulations to the Munster Wheelchair Hurling/Camogie team who retained their M Donnelly Interprovincial All Ireland title at SETU Carlow on Saturday October 21. They defeated Ulster by 3-2 to 3-0 in the final. Darren Dineen (Vice-Captain) and Cormac Downey from the locality were joined by team members Kieran Bennis, Steven Casey, Sean Hassett, Cian Horgan, Sultan Kakar, Paul Kelly, James Mc Carthy, Edel Morrissey, Maurice Noonan, Caroline O’Halloran, Garry O’Halloran, Ellie Sheehy and coaches John Carey and Dave Fitzgerald.

GAELIC GAMES: St Kieran’s defeated Kildimo/Pallaskenry by 2-13 to 0-8 in the quarter final of the County Junior B Football Championship played at Ballysteen Gaelic Grounds on Saturday October 28. They led by 0-7 to 0-5 at half time after playing against the breeze. They bossed the second half aided by two goals from Darragh Mc Mahon to progress to the semi-final. SOCCER NEWS:Creeves Celtic drew 2-2 away to Glin Rovers in the Desmond Premier Division League Cup Group A match on Sunday October 22.Tommy Dillane and Robert Hanley scored their goals as they exited the competition. Carrig Celtic drew 1-1 ( Seanie King) at home to Breska Rovers B in Division 3 of the Desmond League. In Division 1 of the Desmond Ladies League Creeves Celtic drew 3-3 at home to Dromore United with goals from Leah Kelly 2, and Rachel Naughton.

LADIES FOOTBALL: Congratulations to Old Mill who defeated Father Casey’s by 2-15 to 1-11 in the County Novice Championship Final played in the Old Mill on Sunday October 22.

LOTTERY DRAW: The Ardagh Development Association and Saint Kieran’s GAA joint weekly lottery   draw took place on Monday October 23. The numbers drawn were 1,2,8,20 and  there was  no  winner of the € 15,100 Jackpot. Congratulations  to the five lucky dip winners who received  € 40 each: Deirdre Ambrose Ardagh, Shane Hanrahan the Hill Moyvane, Nora Cronin Ardagh, Shane King Carrigkerry, Fiona Hennessy Glenastar. Next Monday night’s jackpot will  be € 15,200. People can play online using club force on the club’s Facebook page, with 6pm on Monday evening the deadline. The tickets are also on sale at the usual outlets, and all support will be appreciated. NOTE  For the month of October  an extra  lucky dip of €100 will be added to the five lucky dips drawn each week to mark the 30th  anniversary of its formation. This week’s winner was Chris Madigan Kilcolman. On November 6, the first lucky dip winner will receive a € 500 holiday voucher. Both organizations wish to thank all the people for their continued support.

RADIO DRAW: Congratulations to Ann Liston Castlemahon, who won € 210, in the West Limerick 102fm 50/50 draw, held on Friday October 27.The tickets cost € 2, or 3 for € 5 and they are available from volunteers, in local shops, (including Moloneys Carrigkerry, and Denis Greaney’s Shop Ardagh) or from the radio station. CLUB DRAW: The  Limerick GAA Club draw was held on Saturday October 28,  and announced on the Sports Show on Limerick Live 95. Congratulations to St Kieran’s members Marian O’Connor and Sinead Hayes who won € 200 each.

YOGA CLASS: A new Yoga Class commences in Ardagh Community Centre on Friday November 3, from 9.45 am to 10.45am. FILM CLUB: Newcastle West Film Club present  ”Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom”  in the Desmond Complex Newcastle West on Friday November 3, at 8pm. Admission € 8 and refreshments available. All are welcome.

HISTORICAL TALKS: The  Rathkeale and District Historical Society talks have resumed for the autumn and winter season in the Community Arts Centre (above the library) Rathkeale. On Friday October 20 at 8.30pm, Claire A Mc Cormick  of University of Limerick will give a talk titled ‘ What’s in a name? The Irish Palatines, new perspectives. Attendances at individual talks is free and membership for the year is € 10.

FLAG FLOOR:  Over the summer months great entertainment has been enjoyed at the Flag Floor Rambling House Glensharrold Carrigkerry. People attended from near and far and abroad to witness the mix of music, song, dance, storytelling, chat and hospitality. The good news is that another night of music and set dancing will be held on Friday November 3, from  9pm to 11.30pm, Admission € 5. Teas and treats are served, and all are welcome, to enjoy the best of traditional entertainment. The card game has also returned  on Wednesday evenings at 8.30pm. Tea and refreshments served, and all are welcome.

GAA FUNDRAISERS:  As part of the Oskar’s,  The Veronica Guerin team are holding a Quiz Night in Reens Bar  Reens Pike on Friday November 3. It starts at 9pm, € 10 per head and lots of prizes to be won. Finger food on the night and all support will be appreciated. A fundraising clothes collection will be held  by the cast of the Bridesmaids on Saturday/Sunday November 4/5. They can be dropped off at Ardagh Community field and at Coolcappa GAA grounds. The proceeds will go towards the new field development at Ardagh.

FAIR DAY: The annual fair day takes place in Athea village on Saturday November 4. There will be livestock for sale, plus stalls on the street selling all goods/ clothes etc. A good day out weather permitting is looked forward to.

RAMBLING HOUSE: A rambling house will be held at Ballysteen Hall on Saturday November 4, at 8pm sharp. All musicians, singers, storytellers, dancers and listeners  are welcome to attend. The Eircode is V94322C, and all are welcome.

BOOK LAUNCH: Keeping the Dream Alive is the title of a new book that tells the story of Limerick’s 1973 All Ireland Hurling win, 50 years on. Work has been ongoing all year by authors James Lundon, Liam O’Brien and Niall Deegan, with input from many more writers. It contains over 500 pages of material and rare photographs recalling all the Limerick matches and events of 1973. The profits from the book will be shared between two local deserving charities, Limerick Society of St Vincent de Paul and The Children’s Ark University Hospital Limerick. The launch will take place at the Woodlands House Hotel Adare on Sunday November 5, from 6.30pm. It promises to be a great night with members of the 1973 team in attendance plus many more guest personalities. The book costs € 30 and will be available to purchase on the night.

NOONAN LIGHTS FUNDRAISER: A fundraising  Charity dance in aid of Noonan’s Christmas Lights will be held at the Woodlands House Hotel Adare on Sunday November 5, from 9pm to 11.30pm. Music by the Michael Collins Band and a raffle will be held for numerous spot prizes. The doors open at 8.30pm and admission is €10. This is the first fundraiser for this year’s Christmas Lights display and all support will be greatly appreciated.

Bodhrán Competition

The annual Bodhrán Competition which was due to be run at Batt’s over the Bank Holiday weekend had to be postponed and will now be run at a later date.

Athea Vintage Club

Our online raffle is continuing until November 3rd with two amazing prizes!!!! Firstly, Aaron Gillane Limerick Hurling All Star has donated signed shorts & socks which he presented to Melissa Dalton – Sophie Mulligans Mother. This is a beautiful piece of Limerick Hurling History displayed in a frame, it would be an amazing addition to any home or business. Aaron kindly gave his time to attend our event on September 3rd and once again Athea welcomed him with huge enthusiasm, it was further enhanced when Roisin Ambrose, Limerick Ladies Football Captain was also in attendance.
