SPORTING ATHEA

Well, whatever about the great rugby game that Ireland had on Saturday evening last,  we here in Athea had a great day on Sunday last when no less than 3 Athea teams did their parish proud to say the least and isn’t it wonderful from our small little parish. Firstly, the Ladies travelled to Croom where they met St Ailbe’s who they beat and now they are in the Co Final this weekend and hopefully they will bring the honours home with them. Then it was off to Feenagh where the relegation final between Bruff and the Athea Premier Junior A Team was played . Again Athea came out victorious avoiding relegation.

The horns blared on Sunday evening to finish a great sporting day as the U-13 Hurling team  won their final against Shannon-Gaels in Glin  and isn’t it wonderful to see our young boys and girls involved in sport of any kind as it keeps them on the straight and narrow, they make great friends  and it gives them confidence too. And of course we have some great basketball teams of every age too. So well done to all the players and lets not forget those who give of their time and energy to train all the different teams.

There was 2 special birthdays celebrated at Brown Joe’s over the weekend. On Friday  evening Kathleen Mullane Gallagher celebrated her 80th along with relatives and friends, all having a very enjoyable time. On Saturday evening it was the turn of Bridie Lynch who was also 80 and she also had a great time with her family and grandchildren etc.  Wishing them both continued good health and happiness.

Fergus Scanlan, on behalf of The Friends of St ITAS,  wishes to thank everyone who gave to the church gate collection on Saturday evening. A total of 500 euro was collected which again will be put to very good use buying up to date equipment etc for the hospital.

This Saturday evening sees the Special Annual Harvest Thanksgiving Mass taking place at 7.30 here in the Church which should be very nice for all parishioners and beyond and next week sees the return of Station Masses for the various townlands in our parish on Tues, Wed, and Thurs evening at 7 pm.

Anyone wanting a lovely little kitten I have 3 looking for good homes at the minute, all the same tiger coloured. Give me a buzz.

Thought for the week
