BEST WISHES to women celebrating their Christmas on January 6th.

FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY – (HOLY DAY) This Feast Day is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God, Saviour of the World.  It celebrates the adoration of Jesus by the Wise Men,  The Maji.  We too get opportunity to adore Jesus on this Feast and acknowledge Him as our Saviour – our forever Friend. Great to see all the locals, decorating their homes and displaying Cribs for Christmas. Sad that the social activities and religious services, have been curtailed. It was a lonely and uncertain time for many.

VOLUNTEERS have a hard time this past year, as professional blockers are everywhere.

FULL MOON was great during the Christmas Season as the sky was fairly clear and bright most nights, only a few nights with a little frost, made for good days for walking out.

VACCINE: The first people in the world to receive a COVID-19 vaccine were not part of a clinical trial. No TV stations or newspapers covered the historic event. No company issued a statement.

On 29 February, less than 2 months after the world awakened to the threat of the new disease, virologist Chen Wei, a major general in China’s army, and six military scientists on her team stood in front of a Chinese Communist Party flag and received injections of an experimental COVID-19.

Wednesday, 23rd December 2020. A total of 56,676 people in Scotland have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, the health secretary told Holyrood, with plans for those people to have their second jab by the end of January. The health secretary added that NHS Scotland expects to receive an additional 172,575 doses of the Pfizer vaccine by the end of the week.

Florida and Texas began vaccinating people over 65 last week.

Israel began a third nationwide lockdown on Sunday night that could last longer than the proposed two weeks. The country has one of the world’s highest COVID vaccination rates, as anyone over 60 is allowed to get the vaccine, along with health care workers and soldiers.

GUIDE to Coronavirus; At the start of the pandemic, stores quickly sold out of disinfectant sprays and wipes. People were advised to wipe down their packages and the cans they bought at the grocery store.

But scientists have learned a lot this year about the coronavirus and how it’s transmitted, and it turns out all that scrubbing and disinfecting might not be necessary.

If a person infected with the coronavirus sneezes, coughs or talks loudly, droplets containing particles of the virus can travel through the air and eventually land on nearby surfaces. But the risk of getting infected from touching a surface contaminated by the virus is low, says Emanuel Goldman, a microbiologist at Rutgers University.

COST: It has cost the HSE nearly €70,000 so far to rent properties and rooms for additional self-isolation facilities, hubs and accommodation in Kerry due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A community assessment hub in Castleisland was opened in April at a cost of €35,000 for a three-month period.

HOSPITAL; Clinical Director at University Hospital Kerry, Dr Niamh Feeley says only non-urgent surgical cases that can safely be deferred have been cancelled.

WASTE; following the troubles of this year, we will have to tighten our belts for many years to come, no extra effort is being made to use and reuse as much as possible. The amount of food waste is rising, and no advice or regulations to reduce it.

MISSION; The Diocesan Mission daily, beginning on Sunday Jan 24th and concluding on Friday Jan 30th! See diocese website.

PRAYERS; All our leaders are too full of themselves to pray or encourage others to do so, that we may be relieved and set free from our present predicament.

RELEASED: A Catholic bishop in Nigeria, who was kidnapped, has been released unharmed, according to the Archdiocese of Owerri.

DROUGHT:  a UCC academic forecast last May that we were entering a drought rich period. He explained that we had droughts in 1854-1860, 1884- 1896, 1904-1912, 1921-1924, 1932-1935, 1952-1954, and 1969-1977. So far his predictions have miserably failed.

The Rebels of Knockanure

Patrick Wallace- Informant  Daniel Sheahan

The Rebels Of Knockanure.

Our hero boys they were brave and true.

No counsel did they take.

‘Till they wandered to that lonely spot.

Where the Black and Tans do lay.

But freedom bold they did uphold.

Torture they did endure.

‘Till it came to their lot, that day to be shot.

In the valley of Knockanure.

In Gortha Glana’s shade of glens.

Our Sinn Fein boys took shade

Waiting for their own dispatch.

Before they would make a raid.

It was not long until Lyons came.

And saying time is not mine nor your.

By the Black and Tans our lives were ran.

In the valley of Knockanure.

When our boys had no escape to make.

There is one thing they did secure.

Their souls were free to meet their God.

Drowning: –

There were three beautiful fiddle players drowned in the river Gale on Saturday June the 11th 1752. They were crossing the river at Gortdromagowna, and a flood arose and caught them. They were drowned in the roaring waters. A man was passing, and he saw them but failed to rescue them. Two of their bodies were found, and were buried in Knockanure churchyard. The third was never found. The hole in which they were drowned is since called “The Fiddlers Hole”. It is in a place called Tubber. It is in the farm now owned by Mrs. L. Buckley.

  1. S. The teller, Joseph Gleeson has died since, he died on the 30th of March 1938. He was a protestant.

to say that there were two gates here and everybody who passed the way with cattle or cars had to pay a toll of a halfpenny. There was also a pound there. There is a Dispensary at Pike. In this building was the old National school whose first teacher was John O’Connor. O’Connor was not long there when he had to flee the country owing to his connection with the Fenians. Then came my Grandfather old Master Lynch who taught there for six years and who opened the school at Rathea in 1875.

My Grandfather was a native of Knockanure. He used to tell stories about a woman name Joan Grogan of Knockanure. This woman used to be “out” with the good people. One night they were on their way to Castleisland to decide whether a girl there name Brosnan was to be (See Duchas Folklore site for more).

People who came to Nairobi in search of casual jobs in the industries that were coming up in this area sought for very cheap accommodation near these industries. Some of them put up cheap iron cabins and houses they made from boxes.”

This, according to the Fr. John, is what gave birth to present-day slum areas where people working low-end jobs battle challenges such as poor housing and congestion, lack of basic amenities such as running water and proper sewerage system and sometimes go for days without getting a job in these companies.

“While coming to this place every morning, I see long queues of men and women who wake up every day in search of casual jobs in companies.
