FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY – (HOLY DAY) This Feast Day is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God, Saviour of the World. It celebrates the adoration of Jesus by the Wise Men, The Maji. We too get opportunity to adore Jesus on this Feast and acknowledge Him as our Saviour – our forever Friend. Great to see all the locals, decorating their homes and displaying Cribs for Christmas. Sad that the social activities and religious services, have been curtailed. It was a lonely and uncertain time for many.

RECORD: It would be great if someone took a recording van around the country, to meet ordinary people and leave them recount the past year. I am told that a researcher working on the vaccine for C19, has close parish connections and only had two days off for Christmas.

DEATH of Jerry Fitzmaurice, Lower Aughrim, Moyvane, on December 25th, 2020. Predeceased by his parents Edward and Kit, sister Bridie, brother James and nephew Hughie. Survived by his wife Anne, son Kevin, daughter Úna, brothers Seán, Brendan, Micheál, Eamon and Jody, sisters Christina and Ann, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, and nieces. Following Requiem Mass in Moyvane church, Jerry Fitzmaurice was laid to rest at Ahavoher Graveyard on 28th January 2020. Jerry was born in 1962, was working for 37 years and got married 31 years ago. He had a great interest in GAA and was a coach for many years.

APPOINTED: Stephen Goulding has been appointed Principal of Kerry College, Clash Road, Denny Street and Listowel Campus. Stephen joined Kerry ETB in 2011, as Deputy Principal of Listowel Community College. In 2015 he was appointed Principal of Coláiste Na Ríochta and North Kerry College of Further Education. His ancestors came from Knockanure.

GUIDE to Coronavirus; At the start of the pandemic, stores quickly sold out of disinfectant sprays and wipes. People were advised to wipe down their packages and the cans they bought at the grocery store.
But scientists have learned a lot this year about the coronavirus and how it’s transmitted, and it turns out all that scrubbing and disinfecting might not be necessary.
If a person infected with the coronavirus sneezes, coughs or talks loudly, droplets containing particles of the virus can travel through the air and eventually land on nearby surfaces. But the risk of getting infected from touching a surface contaminated by the virus is low, says Emanuel Goldman, a microbiologist at Rutgers University.
COST: It has cost the HSE nearly €70,000 so far to rent properties and rooms for additional self-isolation facilities, hubs and accommodation in Kerry due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A community assessment hub in Castleisland was opened in April at a cost of €35,000 for a three-month period.

Drowning: –
There were three beautiful fiddle players drowned in the river Gale on Saturday June the 11th 1752. They were crossing the river at Gortdromagowna, and a flood arose and caught them. They were drowned in the roaring waters. A man was passing, and he saw them but failed to rescue them. Two of their bodies were found, and were buried in Knockanure churchyard. The third was never found. The hole in which they were drowned is since called “The Fiddlers Hole”. It is in a place called Tubber. It is in the farm now owned by Mrs. L. Buckley.

to say that there were two gates here and everybody who passed the way with cattle or cars had to pay a toll of a halfpenny. There was also a pound there. There is a Dispensary at Pike. In this building was the old National school whose first teacher was John O’Connor. O’Connor was not long there when he had to flee the country owing to his connection with the Fenians. Then came my Grandfather old Master Lynch who taught there for six years and who opened the school at Rathea in 1875.
My Grandfather was a native of Knockanure. He used to tell stories about a woman name Joan Grogan of Knockanure. This woman used to be “out” with the good people. One night they were on their way to Castleisland to decide whether a girl there name Brosnan was to be (See Duchas Folklore site for more).

Because of George Blake’s Jewish ancestry, he was not able to marry his girlfriend, Iris Peake, who also worked as Blake’s secretary at MI6, the British intelligence’s foreign branch, according to Blake’s obituary in The Guardian published Saturday. He died aged 98 in Russia. (11 November 1922 – 26 December 2020.
