GRANTS BONANZA:

Ardagh village and surrounding  areas were celebrating last Thursday following the announcement of grants (€241,081) awarded  to four groups. The funding is part of a €50 million Community Recognition Fund, a major initiative to support communities that have welcomed people from Ukraine and other countries. Funding has been provided for sports clubs, community organisations, transport infrastructure and local groups. The constituency of County Limerick has benefited to the tune of over €1m.

St. Kieran’s GAA club have been allocated €164,500 towards the new pitch development. It was granted for the purchase of the land, site preparation, roads, paths and paving, site services,  electric  site services and landscaping.

The ADRSC committee have been awarded €28,556 for their facility in Ardagh. It was granted for ball wall fencing to top of wall 60m, additional lighting, safety fencing along the car park and path, steps to car park to path, bicycle stand, sensor light to clubhouse, non-puncture cone set, for surface, extension of footpath to ball wall area.

Ardagh Hall Committee have been awarded €41,626. It was granted for dry lining with insulated slab, skirting board, architrave, and doors, supply and fitting of floor, electrical works, including access pad, hub desks and chairs, kitchenette, replacement of flashing and chutes. St. Kieran’s Heritage Association have been awarded €2,899 for the purchase of IT equipment. West Limerick Resources CLG have been awarded  €3,500 for Ardagh  for IT equipment.

MARY FLAHERTY: The death has taken place of Mary Flaherty, Castleview, Newcastle West, peacefully in the care of friends at Care Bright Facility, Bruff, on Saturday, May 13. Wife of the late Timothy. Reposing at her daughter Tina’s residence at School Road, Carrigkerry on Monday, May 15, from 5 to 8pm. Arriving at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Newcastle West, on Tuesday for 11.30 am for Requiem Mass, followed by burial after in Holy Cross Cemetery, Athea. Sympathy to her daughters Hannah, Jean, Bernie, Mary, Margery, Nora, and Tina, son Timothy, sons-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers-in-law, relatives and friends. May she rest in Peace.

GAELIC GAMES:  St. Kieran’s defeated Askeaton/Ballysteen/Kilcornan by 0-15 to 0-13 in the final of the Under 17 Hurling Division 3 League final at Kilbreedy on Wednesday, May 17. They led by 0-11 to 0-5 at half time. St. Kieran’s lost to Granagh/Ballingarry by 2-9 to 0-9 in the West Junior B Football League in Ballingarry on Thursday, May 18. St. Kieran’s defeated Patrickswell by 2-8 to 1-4 in Under 15 hurling in Patrickswell on Monday, May 15. St Kieran’s defeated Adare by 1 12 to 2-7 in the West Senior Football League at Coolcappa on Saturday, May 20. They led by 1-5 to 0-3 at half time.

SOCCER NEWS: Creeves Celtic defeated Ballingarry 3-2 at home in the Desmond Premier Division on Friday, May 12 with goals from Eoin McEnery, Bryan Meade and James O’Connor. Carrig Celtic lost 3-2 away to Ballingarry B in the Richard Hogan Cup quarter final on Sunday. Seanie King and Micky Long scored. In the Women’s Munster Junior Shield 2nd round Kilcolman Rovers defeated Kilmallock Utd 3-1 at home also on Sunday, May 14 with goals from Marie Balfe, Dora Bury and Gillian Musgrave.

LOTTERY DRAW: The Ardagh Development Association and Saint Kieran’s GAA joint weekly lottery   draw took place on Monday May 15. The numbers drawn were 1, 20, 21, 22 , and  there was  no  winner of the €12,800 Jackpot. Congratulations to the five lucky dip winners who received €40 each: Marion Anderson (Online),  Alan Hogan (Online), Patsy Donovan, Ardagh, Ann Molyneaux, Ardagh, Mai Gallagher (Online). Next Monday night’s jackpot will  be €12,900. People can play online using club force on the club’s Facebook page, with 6pm on Monday evening the deadline. GROTTO ROSARY: The Holy Rosary will be recited at Churchtown Grotto each evening during May at 6pm.  At the  Grotto in Cahermoyle and the Marian Shrine Rathkeale every evening during the month of May at 6.30 pm and all are welcome.

CLOTHING COLLECTION: The Old Mill Ladies football club are seeking donations of  unwanted clothing to help raise funds at present. The donated items can be placed inside their new orange bin beside their clubhouse. Thanks to all for the continuing support for the club.

VISITOR CENTRE: The Glin Knights Visitor Centre located next to Glin Library is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Admission is free to see this very interesting exhibition.

LISTOWEL MONORAIL: The Lartigue Monorail in Listowel is operating  over the summer months until October 1. The Lartigue will run each afternoon from 1pm to 4.30pm.

OLD MILL NEWS: The Old Mill Ladies Gaelic football club  are holding a fundraising coffee/tea morning in Ardagh Hall on Friday, June 2 from 9am to 1pm and all are welcome to attend.

FLEADH CHEOIL: The County Limerick Fleadh Cheoil will be held in Kilfinane over the June Bank Holiday weekend.  The popular Hup Na Houra show on Friday, June 2 in the Old Chapel Rooms including traditional music song and dance from 8pm. Admission €15. It is a seated candlelit show including complimentary artisan produce, tea and coffee.  Free open-air concerts on Saturday from 7pm with North Cregg and Sunday  from 7pm with Fuinneamh. Competitions and sessions around the town and best of luck to all the local competitors.

FLEADH NUA: The Fleadh Nua will be held in Ennis town over the June Bank Holiday weekend with musicians and dancers participating in competitions, sessions, Céilí and general entertainment. Taylor’s Cross will be playing for a set Céilí in Cois na hAbhna on Saturday, June 3, from 9pm-12am and admission is €10.

FAMILY FUN DAY: St. Kieran’s GAA  club will be holding a family fun day in aid of the new field development in Ardagh in the Astro/community field on Sunday, June 4. It will be a  Craggy Island/Father Ted  theme  afternoon and events start at 1pm. St. Kieran’s Schools Gaelic football blitz will be held at 2pm. The main attraction  will be a comic match involving Priests v Nuns at 3pm. The club will hold their own fittest family event including the hang tough challenge. There will be fun games, face painting, bake sale, tea and tarts, music/dance,  Barbeque. A prize for the best dressed character from the Father Ted Show will be presented and a raffle will be held.  It promises to be a great day out for all family members.

SEAN FINN: An open-air mass will be celebrated at the spot Sean Finn was shot on March 30, 1921, at Ballyroe,  Lisreidy, Loughill West on Sunday, June 4 at 2pm. A Sean Finn Rambling House special  will be held that evening at 8pm at Loughill Recourse  Centre. All welcome.

CLERK’S COLLECTION: Ardagh/Carrigkerry parish clerk’s Bernard and Mary wish to say a sincere thank you to all who contributed to their recent annual collection. Your generosity is very much appreciated. People who may have missed out can still do so this coming week.

ROADWORKS: Limerick Council last week resurfaced a section of the road from McMahon’s Grove, Glensharrold to Kate Daly’s Cross, Kerrikyle. This road was badly in need of attention as it was neglected in the past as it was between the old Newcastle West and Rathkeale areas. Thanks to all the workers involved in the upgrade.

GAELIC GAMES: St. Kieran’s player John Doyle is a member of the Limerick Masters football  36-man team/panel  who defeated Waterford by 3-8 to 1-11 the first round of the All -Ireland  championship in Kirwan Park the Nire Valley Waterford on Saturday,  May 6. They play Kerry next in Killeedy on Saturday, May 27.

St. Kieran’s defeated Dromcollogher/Broadford by 2-18 to 4-11 in Group 2 of the West Junior B Hurling League  played at Dromcollogher  on Sunday May 7. St. Kieran’s defeated Kilmallock by 1-19 to 0-14 in the Under 17 Hurling league semi-final at Kilmallock on Friday, May 12.

The club will be holding a family fun day in aid of the new field development in Ardagh in the Astro/community field on Sunday June 4. It will be a Father Ted/ Craggy Island theme day and more details nearer the date.

SOCCER NEWS: In the Desmond league last week Creeves Celtic had no match and Carrig Celtic received a walkover from Feenagh in the first round of the  Richard Hogan cup. In Division 1 of the Desmond Ladies League Creeves Celtic defeated Feenagh by 1-0 in Feenagh with Linda O’Brien scoring the goal that secured the team the runners -up position.

HISTORY EXHIBITION: The Thomond Archaeological  and Historical Society  are holding an exhibition  celebrating 130  years of local history at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick at present. On display  are rare early  photographs, published journals and artefacts.  It is open to the public Monday to Saturday from 11am to 4pm in St. Mary’s Cathedra,  King’s Island. An optional donation to the Cathedral  for admission is suggested.

HISTORY CONFERENCE: A history conference to mark the centenary of the end of the Civil War will be held at the Desmond Castle Newcastle West on Wednesday, May 17 at 7.30pm. Three historians will  make presentations  and  a question-and-answer session will follow. John O’Callaghan  will speak about the Limerick key events, John Dorney will examine the Limerick deaths,  Liz Gillis will speak about the role of women  in the conflict. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend and view the renovated site  which was the location of fighting between the pro and anti-treaty forces on August 7, 1922.

RAMBLING HOUSE: The next  rambling house will be held at Ballyhahill Hall on Wednesday, May 17, at 8pm. Ita’s Rambling House will be held in the Desmond Complex Newcastle West on Friday, May 19 at 7.30pm. It will be their 10th birthday and all past performers are welcome back to enjoy the celebrations. All musicians, singers’ dancers and storytellers are most welcome to attend both nights.

COMMUNITY ALERT: St. Senan’s and District Community Alert AGM will take place in the Sports Complex, Shanagolden on Wednesday, May 17 at 8pm.

ARCHAEOLOGY PROJECT: The Archaeology of the Revolution in East Limerick will be featured  in a special event  at Galbally Community Centre on Thursday,  May 18, at 7.30pm. The Landscapes  of Revolution Project was established by Damian Shiels and is currently  being supported  by Abarta Heritage Ltd. Its aim is to develop and share techniques for the identification, interpretation and mapping of archaeology sites associated with Ireland’s revolutionary period. The project was devised in response  to an urgent need  to identify, analyse, interpret and map the sights and landscapes  relating to the  revolutionary  decade.

Surprising  as it may seem  post-medieval  sites, locations relating to the War of Independence and Civil War  generally enjoy no  archaeology  protection, are poorly understood  as heritage landscapes, and are often significantly  rarer and more vulnerable  than much of the  medieval  and prehistoric  archaeology  that surrounds us. Members of the team  will be available at Galbally Community Centre  to talk about the project, guide attendees  through the story map website and record any stories  or objects members of the  community  might have pertaining  to the two wars.  Contact Tim Ryan  for further details on 087- 2594030.

DEBRA IRELAND: The Debra Ireland Kerry Challenge 2023 returns on Friday, May 19, Saturday  20, Sunday  21. Eamon O’Kane, Pat Toomey, Mike Histon and Joe Carrig  from the Creeves/Shanagolden area will again be participating in the 3-day 75 K Hike in the Dingle Peninsula. They will be raising funds to ease the suffering of children suffering from E.B. or Butterfly Disease. All donations will be appreciated by the quartet.

MONTH’S MIND: The Month’s Mind Mass for the late Mary (Kiely Glensharrold) McNamara, Raheen, will be celebrated at St. Nessan’s Church, Raheen, Limerick on Saturday, May 13 at 6pm.

TROCAIRE: Ardagh/Carrigkerry parish has forwarded €3,040 to Trocaire in recent weeks. Many thanks to all who contributed to this total.

PARISH CLERK’S COLLECTION: The Ardagh/Carrigkerry parish clerk’s collection will be taken up this coming weekend in Carrigkerry on Saturday, May 13 and Ardagh on Sunday, May 14. We are very lucky to have such dedicated people in charge of both churches. Please be generous with your donations.

HERITAGE MEETING: St. Kieran’s Heritage Association  held their monthly meeting in Ardagh community Hall on Wednesday, May 3, and ten members were present. Chairperson John P. O’Sullivan  welcomed all and Secretary Mary Byrnes read the minutes of the previous meeting and matters arising were addressed. Two grants for funding equipment are being applied for. Work on the 2024 Calendar is progressing and will be ready to go shortly to the printers. No update yet on the proposed midweek trip to Dublin in June. The updated booklet on William Smith O’Brien will be launched on Friday, June 23 in Ardagh with a talk from the author John Hough. A discussion on how to mark Heritage Week in August and Culture night in September  took place with a trip to Glenville House and gardens, Gardai arrival to Ardagh in 1922 and an Irish Night proposed. A new location may be needed for the William Smith O’Brien Plaque which was erected in Cahermoyle in 1998.

A vote of sympathy was passed  to the Kelly family, Maiden Street Newcastle West, on the death of Sean who was a teacher, historian, photographer, writer and keeper of historical items, about his native town and surrounds. He was a founding member of the Newcastle West Historical Society and contributed many fine articles to their journals. He was a valuable contributor to the Newcastle West Olden Times Facebook page. He played a leading role in the Phelan’s Mill Film which was shown in Newcastle West Library on Thursday, January 16, 2020. Sean a man of many talents who was generous with his knowledge and possessions will be missed but not forgotten. The members present were John P. O’Sullivan, Mary Byrnes, John Hough, Theresa Doyle McMahon, Michael Ambrose, Geraldine Ambrose, David Dillane, Ned Liston, Chuck Lee, Tom Aherne, with apologies from others. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 7, at Ardagh Community Hall at 8pm. It is proposed to hold a walk along the Greenway as well, weather permitting.

WEST BOARD: The West Limerick GAA Board  presented the west members of the Limerick Wheelchair hurling senior team with specially inscribed plaques at a function in the Devon Inn Hotel on Wednesday, April 26. Those who received awards were locals Darren Dineen,  Cormac Downey, with Ellie Sheehy (Captain), Cian Horgan, Maurice Noonan.

VINTAGE RALLY: Dromcollogher/District Respite Care Centre will hold their annual vintage rally and May fair family fun day in aid of the centre on Sunday, May 14. An enjoyable day out is anticipated with  trade stalls, food, amusements, and vintage and classic vehicles on display.

GLENVILLE HOUSE:  The following are the Glenville House and Gardens Ardagh opening hours for 2023: May 2-31, June 1-10, (Heritage Week) August 11-20, inclusive. Tuesday to Saturday from 9-30am to 1-30pm. Admission €5, Students €3, children and old age pensioners are free.  The house is located a mile from Ardagh on the Kilcolman road and is well worth a visit.

OLD RECTORY: The Old Rectory, Ballywilliam, Rathkeale is open to the public from May 1 to November 30. The opening hours are on Saturday’s and Sunday’s from 10am to 2pm. HOLY COMMUNION: The First Holy Communion  Ceremony will be celebrated in St. Kyran’s Church, Coolcappa on Saturday, May  27 at 10.30am and in St.  Colman’s Church, Kilcolman on Saturday, May 27 at 12.30pm.

OLD MILL NEWS: The Old Mill Ladies Gaelic football club  are holding a fundraising coffee/tea morning in Ardagh Hall on Friday, June 2 from 9am to 1pm and all are welcome to attend.
