Match:

Saturday April 28:

Athea 2-11            Knockainey 3-13

Our Intermediate team played their second and final game in the group stages of the Championship on Saturday evening last away to Knockainey. Numbers were tight but despite this our girls put in a fine performance on a wet and windy evening. It was point for point in the first half and after fifteen minutes of play the sides were all square at four points apiece. Athea then took a two point lead thanks to points from Sandra Larkin and Megan Carroll, but unfortunately the home side scored their first goal of the game to take a one point lead. Shortly after an outstanding move involving Jackie Stackpoole, Mary Ita Casey, Anita Quinn finished when Noelle Curtin rattled the ball to the Knockainey net. Knockainey regrouped and went for a second goal, but an outstanding save from Sarah O’ Connor in goals kept them at bay. Just before half time Knockainey kicked three unanswered points to take a one point lead into the break, the score read Athea 1-06, Knockainey 1-07. A point early in the second half by Sandra Larkin had the side level. Shortly after Knockainey got their second goal of the match, but Athea rallied scoring three more points and the match was all square at 1-10 to 2-07. Knockainey hit a purple patch and scored 1-06 without reply to take a commanding lead. A point from the boot of Mary Ita Casey and a great goal from Noelle Curtin left five points between the team with minutes remaining. We had two late chances of goals but unfortunately luck was not on our side and they both went wide. Leaving the final score Athea 2-11, Knockainey 3-13. Team: Sarah O’ Connor, Ciara Hunt, Jackie Stackpoole, Amy Carmody, Saorcha Fitzgerald, Katie Collins, Maeve Murphy, Rebekah Daly, Rachel Greaney, Lisa O’ Connell, Mary Ita Casey, Anita Quinn, Noelle Curtin, Sandra Larkin, Megan Carroll, Joanne Culhane.
