Athea GAA

Mackey Draw:

The annual ‘Mick Mackey’ draw is once again about to start with some great prizes as always – from big cash prizes to holidays and cars. It is hoped that once again Athea parishioners will support the draw as it means our GAA Club and Ladies Football Club will both benefit from the ticket sales. So you never know your luck – last year Athea had a few winners.

Commemoration Night:

Well the grand Commemoration Night for the gallant Athea teams of 1968 and 1964 has been set for Friday, October 5th at The Devon Inn. No doubt this will be a memorable night for all the players, their families and the whole of Athea parish, with past players hopefully travelling from far and wide to celebrate the 50 years! There will be a meal, guest speaker, music, disco etc in what promises to be a very special occasion. So mark it in your diary now!

Great to See:

Well wasn’t it marvelous to see no less than ‘52’ players togged out for training on Saturday last up at the pitch between Intermediates and U-16s. There really is “a great buzz” in the ‘Camp’ this year – watch this space and the scoreboards!

Coiste na nÓg:

Match:

Sunday February 18:

U14s:

Our U14s had their first outing of the year against Belville Gaels in the Féile Peile B competition on Sunday morning last in Athea.  Our team started strong, we got on a lot of ball and we were very tight in defense. We got a couple of scores from Daire O’ Shea and James Broderick. The opposition hit a purple patch scoring a couple of goals to take the lead. We got the score of the game when Daire O’ Shea switched the play all the way across to Evan Curry up from wing back and he slotted over a super point from twenty five yards. After half time we got tired and struggled to get on the ball. We drove at the opposition in the last ten minutes, but a few last ditch blocks and saves denied Gearoid O’ Sullivan and Michael Walsh goals. The team showed great heart with a spirited performance and with a bit of training the team will be flying. Teamwork was key and if this continues there are great prospects ahead for the team. Panel: Tomás Ahern, Cillian O’Connor, Conor Mullane, Donnchadh Barrett, Tadhg Ahern, Fergal Pierse, Evan Curry, Gearoid O’Sullivan, Daire O’Shea, James Lee, James Broderick, Rory Cleary, James Hunt, Michael Walsh, Rory O’Mahony, Ciaran Hunt, Callum O’Mahony & Calum Gleeson.
