To follow on from last week’s pre-and post Christmas news

Congrats to  Jacqui Stackpoole (daughter of Margaret and Tom) Gortnagross who, while holidaying in New York over Christmas, got engaged to Con Wrenn of Tournafulla. Best wishes to them for the future.

Congrats are also extended to my nephew in Australia, Jamie Hayes, whose wife Cheri and himself were blessed with their first baby, a little boy they are naming Alex James. Congrats to the proud grandparents also Patsy and James Hayes in Templeathea.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family, relatives and friends of Kevin Quinlan who died suddenly recently I Ballybunion where he had retired with his wife Joan (nee Browne) and daughter Claire. He was laid to rest in Bantry, Co. Cork. May the light of heaven be his

Sympathy is also extended to Anne Denihan of Lower Athea on the death of her sister over the Christmas period, Mary Breda Lee will be remembered by her family and friends. May she rest in peace

The death  took place on Friday last in Philadelphia of Darby O’Connor, formerly of Park, Upper Athea. A remembrance mass will be held here in Athea for Darby at a later date. Sincere sympathy goes to his family in the USA and his extended family here in Athea and district. ‘Go ndeana Dia trócaire le na h-anam.

The collection for our sacristan Carol O’Connor will be taken up on February 3rd and 4th at all masses. As we all realize Carol does an amount of work organizing church matters, ceremonies, preparing the altar and a lot more – so you are asked to give as generously as possible, to show your appreciation.

Why would anyone “in their right mind” want to break into our sacristy here in the church. I wonder does whoever did this awful thing realize that the church belongs to ‘EVERYONE’ in our parish. So in effect the culprit has not only hurt our clergy deeply, but all of the parishioners. And if they think deeply enough about it – they have the ‘whole parish’ to answer to and deal with. Fr. Mullins has asked to keep ‘eyes and ears’ open at all times.

We are constantly complaining about our weather here – however with temperatures soaring to between 47° – 50° in Australia and then in America down to minus 25° and more and then the terrible mud-slides in California – we have to be extremely thankful – no extremes, earthquakes, tornados, volcanoes and much more.
