Athea GAA

Con Colbert Commemoration Weekend:

There was a huge turnout and great support for all the Athea and Castlemahon teams who played in Páirc na nGael on Saturday evening last to commemorate the memory of Con Colbert. The weather was good for most of the day as the U8s, U10s and U12s kept the crowd well entertained with great displays of football before the big match of the day. A number of past and present players lined out for both teams for the main event. Our new priest in the parish Fr. Duggan threw in the ball at the start of the match and after a very entertaining game it was Athea who were the winners of the Con Colbert Cup. It was great to see throughout the day both young and old from each parish enjoying a cup of tea from the Clubhouse or a burger from the BBQ. We would like to thank all those who helped organize the day. We would like to thank Frank Reidy and Castlemahon GAA for taking part in the event and the Colbert family who were in attendance on the day. We would also like to thank Jack Quaid for the BBQ. Michelle Curry for taking the photos. Lisa Hunt, Mary Hunt, Sinead Hunt and Sarah O’Connor for helping with the teas and coffees. A big thank you to Tommy Denihan for refereeing all the games. It was great to be part of the Commemoration weekend and one that will be remembered for years to come
Cards At Brown Joe’s:
Athea GAA club are starting a progressive 41 card game on Monday night October 3rd at Brown Joes Bar. The game will be 2x3s and players sitting down for 9p.m. We urge all players to come on time as we will be starting on time. There will be cash prizes for the winners as well as raffle prizes and a table prize. All card players are more than welcome and we are hopeful of a good crowd. This is part of the clubs fundraising for the pitch development which to date has cost €130,000. There were four games played there last Saturday as part of the Con Colbert Commemoration weekend and the pitch was in pristine condition.

Pitch use:

At a time when our new pitch is well established we would hope that our club members make full use out of the high quality surface and goalposts. The more practice that a young player puts in the better they get. With the long evenings and dry pitch there is plenty of opportunity for players to use the pitch for practice in addition to training sessions. Some players are already doing so and the extra practice is serving them well. With the facilities we are developing combined with plenty of hard work and practice we won’t be long improving our results.

Facilities long ago:

Submissions are invited from past members who can remember the contrast between pitches long ago and what the current players have available to them. We will add to our notes the best submission received in the next two weeks where the differences are best articulated. Submissions should be handed in to Rose’s shop/Brouders or emailed to [email protected]

We would hope to invite further entries in the coming weeks on “long ago topics” from writers with good memories.
