County Intermediate Football Championship:

Athea 1-08         Castlemahon 0-14

Our intermediates played their third match in this year’s championship last Thursday evening in Tournafulla against Castlemahon. The first half was evenly contested with Athea in front at halftime on a score line of 1-03 to 0-04, thanks to a well worked goal from Kevin Murphy and Shane Mulvihill’s free taking. The second half proved to be a tougher affair with Castlemahon adding a further ten points to their tally by comparison to our five. James Guinea, Castlemahon’s corner forward gave an exhibition in free taking from the ground and put distance between the two teams in the second half. In the end Castlemahon ran out winners by three points in what was a very even match for most of the game. We will now have to hope that results go our way in the last two rounds of the championship in order to have a chance of making the quarter finals. Our next match is against Mountcollins and is scheduled for the weekend after next. Panel: Gerard Collins, Michael Reidy, Matthew Tierney, Shane Tierney, Denis Greaney, Padraig Reidy, Shane Mulvihill, Martin Chawke, Jamie Collins, Jason Kelly, Mark Reidy, Gerard Ahern, Kevin Murphy, Pat Ahern, Darren Murphy, Kieran Harnett, Tommy Quaid, Pa Chawke, Neilo Keane, Jason Dalton, Dan McMahon, Jack Denihan, Thomas Brosnan & Garry Carroll.

Pitch use:

At a time when our new pitch is well established we would hope that our club members make full use out of the high quality surface and goalposts. The more practice that a young player puts in the better they get. With the long evenings and dry pitch there is plenty of opportunity for players to use the pitch for practice in addition to training sessions. Some players are already doing so and the extra practice is serving them well. With the facilities we are developing combined with plenty of hard work and practice we won’t be long improving our results.

Facilities long ago:

Submissions are invited from past members who can remember the contrast between pitches long ago and what the current players have available to them. We will add to our notes the best submission received in the next two weeks where the differences are best articulated. Submissions should be handed in to Rose’s shop/Brouder’s or emailed to [email protected]

We would hope to invite further entries in the coming weeks on “long ago topics” from writers with good memories

Club Draw:

Our next Club Draw takes place this Saturday night in Sean Batt’s bar. All are welcome to attend. Tickets are still available to purchase and a big thank you to all those who have supported our draw so far this year.

White Paint:

If anyone has any type of unwanted old white paint lying around in an attic or a garage please contact Jacqueline on 086-0670091. The paint will be used to line the new pitch for up-coming matches in the next few weeks.

Wednesday August 10:

Athea 2-07  Granagh/Ballingarry 3-09

Our U14s travelled to Ballingarry on Wednesday evening last to take on the locals in their last match of the year. As with the 16s the Monday evening before, we struggled to put a team together for this game and the players that turned up put in a great team performance on the night. The home side was much the better team in the first half and put us under all sorts of pressure. A great goal by Gavin Ambrose kept us in the game, but we still trailed by six points at the break. We made a great come back in the second half and scored some great points. The towering Aidan Curry was now playing at full forward and he set up Luke Gleeson for our second goal. We scored a couple of more points and the match was now level, unfortunately Granagh/Ballingarry finished the stronger and won by a few points at the final whistle. Team:  Gavin Mulvihill, Eoin Sheahan, Thomas McEnery, Pierce O’Brien, Jack Hunt, Alex McEldowney, Brandon Finucane, Aidan Curry, Eoin O’Shea, Gavin Ambrose, Andrew O’Riordan, Michael Tierney, Danny Brady, Adam Byrne & Luke Gleeson.

Friday August 12: U8s:
Our U8s travelled to Mick Neville Park on Friday evening last to take part in a regional blitz. We had ten players togged out and they put in super performances against Newcastle West, St. Kierans and Fr. Caseys. They all did very well in the maroon and white as they put into practice what they were been coached in Páirc na nGael on Friday nights. Panel: Tomás Ahern, Molly Hunt, Tony, Ahern, Patrick Healy, Jamie O’Mahony, Tom Ahern, Dylan Finucane, Tomás Ahern, Caoimhe Ahern & Michael Ahern.
