West Intermediate Football Championship:

Thursday March 17:

Athea 0-09         Mountcollins 0-10

Athea lost out by the narrowest of margins to Mountcollins in the West Intermediate Football Championship on St. Patrick’s Day. James Ryan opened the scoring with a point inside thirty seconds and added another a few minutes later. Darren Murphy increased our lead with a well taken point before Mountcollins opened their account a few minutes later with a point of their own. We had further points from Darren Murphy, Patrick Ahern and Jamie Collins to give us a six point lead, but two points late in the half from the home side left four between the teams at the break. Mountcollins started the second half brightly and closed the gap to a single point after ten minutes. A great save by Timmy Enright in goals kept them at bay and Patrick Ahern put two points between the teams when he raised the white flag with fifteen minutes left on the clock. The sides were soon level when Mountcollins scored two points of their own and it made for an exciting finish. We got our noses in front again when Gerard Ahern tapped over a free but it was the opposition who finished stronger and two late points ensured victory for the home side. The final score read Athea 0-09, Mountcollins 0-10. Team: Timmy Enright, Padraig Reidy, Matthew Tierney, Shane Tierney, Michael Reidy, Martin Chawke, Shane Mulvihill, Pa Chawke, Jonathan Fitzgerald, Gerard Ahern, Jamie Collins, Padraic Walsh, James Ryan, Patrick Ahern, Darren Murphy. Subs: Pa Kiely, Jason Kelly, Jason Dalton, Neilo Keane, Dan McMahon, Gerard Collins, Eoin McCarthy & Thomas Brosnan.

County Football League Division 2:

Saturday March 19:

Athea 1-07         Oola 2-11

Athea opened the scoring inside the first few minutes when Gerard Ahern tapped over a close range free after Tommy Quaid had been fouled. For the next twenty minutes it was all Oola as they scored a goal and four points to take control of the match. Athea came back into the game when Jamie Collins scored a goal after great work by James Ryan. Gerard Ahern converted his second free of the match and a great point by Darren Murphy left just a point between the teams. Oola raised the white flag just before the break to leave the half time score Athea 1-03 Oola 1-05. We started the second half brightly when Jamie Collins and Gerard Ahern both scored points but the opposition scored six unanswered points to put the match beyond doubt. Points for Gerard Ahern and Pa Chawke closed the gap but a goal for Oola late on left the final score Athea 1-07 Oola 2-11. Team: Gerard Collins, Jason Dalton, Matthew Tierney, Shane Tierney, Padraig Reidy, Martin Chawke, Michael Reidy, Pa Chawke, Jonathan Fitzgerald, Jamie Collins, Gerard Ahern, Padraic Walsh, James Ryan, Tommy Quaid, Darren Murphy. Athea Coiste na nÓg are delighted to announce that we will be taking part and also be a host club in this year’s National Féile Football Competition (U14) which will take place on June 24- 26. Féile will be the biggest youth sporting event in Europe in 2016 and will take place in South West Munster with clubs from West Limerick, Kerry and North Cork hosting visiting teams. Our visiting club will bring twenty four players who will stay with host families in our Parish for the weekend and each club will play a minimum of four games. This is a great opportunity for our U14 team to take part in a National Football competition and it also gives all involved the chance to make new friends with players from clubs outside Limerick. For further Féile information please check out GAA Féile on Facebook or follow @ Féilegaa on Twitter. If anyone knows of any accommodation available in the parish and surrounding area that weekend for the families of the visiting team please contact Jacqueline at 086-0670091.

U14 Division 3  (Sat, March 19th)

Athea Utd (2) 2   David McEnery, Michael Tierney

Kilcolman Rvs B (2) 2

After the high scoring draw away to Shountrade it was back to The Vales last Saturday morning where Kilcolman Rovers B were the visitors. No such excitement in this game however despite the four goals. It looked ominous even as early as the fourth minute when Kilcolman took the lead with a penalty needlessly conceded and it got worse soon after when the visitors doubled their lead soon afterwards. In fairness to the Athea boys they pulled one back when David McEnery found the net and by half time we were level when Michael Tierney finished well. The second half was short on quality with the nearest either side came to scoring was when Andrew O’Riordan saw his half volley come back off the left post following an Eoin O’Shea corner from the right.

LAST MAN STANDING

Our last man competition continues and now its starting to get exciting as those still standing after week six will have to select another team week by week until we have a winner. Week five had some people having a bye due to their selections being involved in the FA Cup (weekend of March 12th/13th). That weekend twenty progressed and four were eliminated. Last weekend (March 19th/20th) twelve have made it through and eight were eliminated. We will need the remaining twelve to send on their picks for the next set of fixtures (April 2nd/3rd). Best of luck to those still in the running.
