Athea United Soccer

Division 1 League (Sun, February 7th)

Athea Utd      (6) 10  Kevin Murphy (3), Darren Murphy (3)

Steven McEnery, Maurice Hayes, Shane Mulvihill, John Cotter

Pallaskenry (1) 1

After winning against Rathkeale B in the Reidy Cup last Sunday week we returned to league action with Pallaskenry the visitors to The Vales. Conditions were similar to the week before with a strong wind and persistent rain but despite this the pitch again held up very well despite the recent very wet weather.

When we played Pallaskenry back in October we came away with a hard earned two one win and it looked very much like a similar outcome when the hoops opened the scoring after a slick build up and a first time finish. However we were soon level when the in form Kevin Murphy found the net and not long after we were ahead when leading scorer Darren Murphy, another striker in form found the Pallaskenry net. More good play saw Steven McEnery make it three one with his third goal of the season. We were on top now and a three goal flurry late in the first half effectively put this game to bed, Darren with his second of the game and a brace from brother Kevin saw the latter complete a first half hat trick. The second half began as the first ended with Athea on the attack and we made it seven when Maurice Hayes finished well for his first of the season. Darren completed his hat trick soon after before Shane Mulvihill netted from a free kick before John Cotter finished the scoring in the closing stages.

Team: Pa Ahern, James Ryan, Mathew Tierney, Shane Mulvihill, Padraig Reidy, Steven McEnery, Gerard Collins, Gerard Ahern, Maurice Hayes, Darren Murphy, Kevin Murphy. Subs Jamie Collins Subs Joe Vaughan, John Cotter, Mike Reidy. Referee: John Roche.
