Matches:
Under 16s:
The under 16s travelled to Coolyroe on Saturday morning last to take on Deel Rangers in a playoff to see who would get into the cup semi-final or the shield semi-final. The home side opened the scoring with two early points, but we were soon ahead when Liam McAuliffe converted a penalty. Deel rangers hit back with two points of their own and then we conceded two soft goals midway through the half. Points from David O’ Connor and Liam McAuliffe closed the gap, but the home side scored two more before the break to leave the half time score Athea 1-03, Deel Rangers 2-08. We were much improved in the second half and three pointed frees from the boot of Liam McAuliffe brought us back into the game. Deel Rangers scored two goals in quick succession to leave us with a mountain to climb. Our young team did not give up and only for three top class saves from the Deel Rangers goal keeper, Adam Flanagan we would have been back in contention in this match. We had further points from David O’ Connor, Sean Ryan and John Sexton and the final score read Athea 1-11, Deel Rangers 4-09. Best for Athea were Liam McAuliffe, Sean Ryan and Micheál Ambrose. We will now play Bruff in the shield semi-final this week. Time and venue to be confirmed. Team: David O’ Sullivan, Jack Gleeson, Shane Ambrose, Mark McAuliffe, Cillian Liston, Micheál Ambrose, Micheál Dalton, Sean Ryan, Alan Kelly, John Sexton, Andy Ahern, Jack Vaughan, Liam McAuliffe, Brian Sheahan, David O’ Connor. Athea United Soccer
U12 Division 3 (Thur, September 3rd)
Athea Utd (0) 2 Daire O’Shea (pen), Callum Buckley
Askeaton (1) 2
Our under twelves played their first game of the season last Thursday evening at The Vales with Askeaton our opponents. This season the twelves games are nine a side and it took us awhile to adapt to this but once we did we played our full part in an exciting contest that ended two goals apiece. Askeaton started well but met a hard working Athea defence and behind them we had a very reliable keeper in Gavin Mulvihill and he made two good saves in the first half. At the other end the Askeaton keeper was busy too and made one good save to deny James Broderick as the striker chased onto a through ball. Shauna Sweeney then shot just over the bar following a Daire O’Shea corner on the left. But it was Askeaton that went in at the break a goal ahead.
The second half was dominated for the most part by Athea with Calum Gleeson, Gearoid O’Sullivan and Michael Walsh playing well in defence while Daire and Fergal Pierse were dominating midfield and ably supported by Killian O’Connor, Evin Curry and Callum Buckley. We had some good chances but the Askeaton keeper denied us on a few occasions. Eventually the pressure paid off and a handball saw us awarded a penalty which Daire converted. It was game on again. But within two minutes Askeaton were back in front with a penalty of their own but to their credit the Athea players kept pushing forward and went so very close when Daire struck the angle of bar and post. With time pushing on we kept going forward and won a free outside the area which Callum took and it ended in the net somehow. Shortly afterwards the referee sounded the final whistle and Athea had gotten the draw the richly deserved and it could have been a win had it not been for some fine goalkeeping by the Askeaton custodian.
Well done to all the players and we look forward to more of the same tonight when we play away to Mountcollins in our second game in the league.
