Sunday August 9:

County Intermediate Football Championship:

Athea 2-04            Mungret/St. Pauls 0-09

Athea have qualified for the knockout stages of the County Intermediate Football Championship after a hard fought win over Mungret/St. Pauls in Askeaton on Sunday last. This was a very tough physical match and scores were hard to come by. Both sides found it hard to break down each other’s defence, but after eight minutes a long ball in from Gerard Ahern found Darren Murphy on the edge of the square and he made no mistake slotting the ball into the net for the opening score. Mungret/St. Pauls hit back and scored three unanswered points to level the match. Shortly afterwards great work by Dylan Griffin found Gerard Ahern forty yards out, his pin point pass found James Ryan all alone inside the twenty meter line and he rolled the ball past the oncoming keeper for our second goal. The opposition’s running game was causing us problems and they were rewarded when they won a penalty after twenty minutes for a foul inside the box. Kieran Hartnett, who was making his Championship debut saved the penalty brilliantly and cleared his lines to the delight of all the Athea supporters who had travelled to the match. Shane Mulvihill pointed a free after James Ryan had been fouled to extend our lead. Mungret/St. Pauls attacked again this time been denied by the post, soon after Matthew Tierney denied them a certain score when he blocked down superbly. Two minutes to half time Mungret/St. Pauls scored a point but Patrick Ahern raised the white flag after great work by Michael Reidy just before the whistle to leave the score at the break Athea 2-02, Mungret/St. Pauls 0-04. The second half was always going to be tough and it was the city side that scored the first two points of the half to close the gap. James Ryan scored a wonderful point from twenty five yards out to put three between the teams. Mungret/St. Pauls responded well and scored two more points, but the experienced Gerard Ahern split the posts with a wonderful point with fifteen minutes left on the clock. A pointed free for the opposition left just one point between the teams and a nail biting finish ahead of all of us. A combination of poor shooting and brilliant defending, including a super block down by Jamie Collins meant Athea held on for the win and a place in the knockout stages of the Championship on a score line of Athea 2-04, Mungret/St. Pauls 0-09.  A big thank you to all our supporters who travelled to cheer on our boys. Team: Kieran Hartnett, Michael Reidy, Tom Collins, Raymond Brouder, Dylan Griffin, Shane Mulvihill, Jamie Collins, Martin Chawke, Darren Murphy, Gerard Ahern, Shane Tierney, Patrick Ahern, Philip Collins, James Ryan.  Subs: Padraig Reidy (Raymond Brouder), Mark O’Connor (Philip Collins), Sean Ahern (Dylan Griffin), Brian Ahern (Pat Ahern), Pa Kiely, Steven McEnery, Neilo Keane, Dan McMahon, Jason Dalton, Pa Chawke, Timmy Enright & Garry Carroll.

Matches: U14:

Athea 5-19    Shamrock Gaels 2-02.

Our 14s played a must win game against Shamrock Gaels on Wednesday evening last in Páirc na nGael. We started brightly and opened the scoring when John Sexton scored a goal after great work by David O’Connor. We then scored three unanswered points one each for John Sexton, TJ White and a super pointed free from the boot of David O’Connor. We continued to pile on the pressure and a long ball in from John Sexton was fisted to the net by the quick thinking Jack O’Connor. A point each for Brian English and John Sexton gave us a commanding lead. Unfortunately we fell asleep for the last five minutes of the half conceding two goals and two points to leave the half time score Athea 2-05, Shamrock Gaels 2-02. In the second half our boys totally dominated keeping the visitors scoreless for the rest of the match. We scored four goals and fourteen wonderful points to the delight of all the Athea supporters.  Ryan Greaney, John Sexton, Jack O’Connor, TJ White, Jason Dillon, David O’Connor and Jack Hunt all getting on the scoreboard.
