Matches:

U14:

Our U14s played extremely well on Tuesday of last week when they beat Shannon Gaels in Páirc na nGael in a very exciting match. In a fairly even first half both sides gave it their all, but it was the visitors who had a narrow lead at the break. In the second half, our boys played the best football they have played all year with John Sexton, Jamie O’Mahony and Alex McEldowney all outstanding on the night. We scored some lovely points and scored a few great goals and were ahead on the scoreboard at the final whistle. Team: Aidan Curry, Eoin Sheahan, Alex McEldowney, Ryan Greaney, David O’Connor, Jamie O’Mahony, Thomas McEnery, John Sexton, TJ White, Danny Brady, Eoin O’Shea, Padraig McMahon, Pauric Enright, Jack O’Connor & Daire O’Shea.

U12:
Our under 12s have been busy lately with three matches. We played St. Kierans U 11s and U12 teams and Fr. Caseys U 11s. We were at home against St. Kierans U 11s on Tuesday 14 and they really put it up to us in what was a very good game that was beneficial to both sides. We traveled to Coolcappa on Thursday 16 to play a strong St. Kierans U 12 team and were delighted to come away with a draw. We were satisfied with the first half performance, but still trailed 2.08 to 2.03 at half time. With the slight breeze in the second half we got on top to outscore them 0.6 to 0.1 to snatch a well-deserved draw in a very sporting game. On Tuesday last in the High Field we welcomed Fr. Casey’s U11s for an enjoyable challenge game. The young Fr. Casey’s team played all the football in the first half despite playing against the breeze. They were the better team in this half and but for some last gasp defending and poor shooting on their part they would have been more than one point ahead. Oisin Woulfe from Cratloe was the stand out player in this half at center back for Fr. Casey’s. We made a few position changes at half time and despite Fr Casey’s scoring first in the second half, two quick goals swung the game in our favor. We have a good panel of players who are excellent to train and this can be seen in the way they continue to improve. Our next game is at home to Granagh/Ballingarry on Thursday Aug 13. Panel: Andrew O’Riordan, Michael Tierney, Eoin O’Shea, Brandon Finucane, Dermot Pierse, T.J. Hunt, Pierce O’Brien, Pauric Enright, Gavin Ambrose, Jack Vaughan, Adam Byrne, Daire O’Shea, Cillian O’Connor, Fergal Pierse, Gearoid O’Sullivan, Gavin Mulvihill and Conor Mullane.

U10:
Our under 10s traveled to Glin to play the locals on Friday night last. This was a very enjoyable high scoring game with excellent displays from Calum Gleeson, James Broderick, Callum Buckley and Michael Walsh. The other players who all played well were James Lee, Evan Curry, Ciaran Hunt, James Hunt, Brid Hunt, Ailísa Ahern and Niamh Ambrose.

RECORD NUMBERS AT SOCCER CAMP

The FAI Summer Soccer School, hosted by Athea Utd AFC last week was an outstanding success with a record number of children attending the camp. We had 99 children attend the camp which is a huge number for us and is up 30% on the numbers we had in 2014 which proves the growth and popularity of soccer in the country.

Head Coach was Cillian O’Connor and the coaches at the camp were Ed Gallagher, Megan Carroll, Tomas Lane, Dayle Danaher, John Chinazo and Steven McEnery. I would, on behalf of Athea Utd like to thank Cillian and all the coaches who looked after all the children last week who did their job in a very professional manner.

All the children received a full kit, backpack and football as well as learning skills and making new friends as well.

We are looking forward already to the 2016 soccer camp.

ATHEA PARISH FESTIVAL 2015

As part of the Athea Parish Festival we ran a junior soccer tournament at The Vales on Monday last with four teams competing namely Glin Rovers, Na Fianna (Listowel), Classic FC (Tralee) and ourselves. The semi-finals saw Glin Rovers beat Classic FC 2-0 while Na Fianna and ourselves drew 1-1 with the Listowel side winning on penalties. The final saw Na Fianna  beat Glin Rovers 2-0 while we drew 1-1 with Classic FC in the 3rd/4th place playoff. Presentations took place afterwards in Brown Joe’s Bar where Athea Utd Chairman Denis Murphy presented Na Fianna captain Kevin Murphy with the cup.

We would like to thank the three teams for playing in the tournament and thanks to Tommy O’Grady of Brown Joe’s Bar for the food after the games.

SYMPATHY

Last week the parish was hit with the shocking and sad news of the death in Wales of Benny Collins, news that is very hard to believe. Benny played soccer with Athea Utd and was one of the finest defenders to wear the club colours, a tough defender who played the game fairly. To his wife Mel, son Harry, parents Denis and Mary-Ellen, brothers Denis, John, Leo and sisters Catherine and Helena, extended family and friends we offer our deepest and heartfelt sympathies. May He Rest In Peace.
