Matches:U16:

Athea 2-08                   St. Kierans 3-07

Our U16s travelled to Coolcappa on Monday evening last to take on St. Kierans in the fourth round of the league. This was a tough physical game with not an inch been given by either team. We had loads of possession in the first ten minutes, but could not convert it into scores. St. Kierans opened the scoring in their very first attack with a well taken point. Shortly after they added another point and then hit us for a goal. We got our first score of the half when Alan Kelly pointed a free after seventeen minutes. The home side tapped over a point of their own, but we responded well when Alan Kelly rose the white flag. John Sexton narrowed the gap when he scored a great point after good work from Micheál Ambrose, just before half time St. Kierans scored another point to leave the half time score Athea 0-03, St. Kierans 1-04. We were quick of the mark in the second half when Alan Kelly pointed following a pass from Sean Ryan. Soon after St. Kierans got their second goal of the night, but we responded well when Alan Kelly and Sean Ryan got a point each. The home side got a point of their own, but Liam McAuliffe scored a brilliant goal after a pin point pass from Micheál Ambrose to close the gap to two points. Unfortunately our backs were caught napping and following a goal mouth scramble St. Kierans booted the ball to the back of our net. They followed this up with two points and the game looked all over. Our boys did not give up. They dug deep and two points from Liam McAuliffe brought us back into the match. Shortly after Sean Ryan went on a surging run up the middle of the field, pass the ball off to Jack Vaughan who made no mistake finding the back of the net to close the gap to two points once again. With time almost up, Athea threw everything at St. Kierans, but we could not get the goal we needed to win the game. At the final whistle the score was Athea 2-08, St. Kierans 3-07.
