Football League Division Three Champions:

Athea were crowned Football League Division Three champions during the week, when our two nearest rivals, Glin and Mungret/St. Pauls played out a draw which means that neither team can catch Athea in the final round of matches. Well done to Pat Higgins, Colm Hassett, Eddie Barrett and the entire team on their success and we look forward to Division Two football next year.

Matches:

West Junior B Championship:

Athea 1-04       Ballysteen 2-08

Our Junior Bs played Ballysteen in the last round of the West Junior B Championship in Glin on Sunday evening last. We started lively putting Ballysteen under pressure early on but found scores hard to come by. The opposition came more into the game and scored two points to take the lead. John Cotter found Dan McMahon with a long pass in the corner; he laid it off to Neilo Keane who scored a wonderful point from thirty yards. The score of the game came five minutes later when Tommy Quaid burst up the wing, toe to hand. Played a one two with William Mullane and scored a brilliant goal to give Athea the lead. Unfortunately we conceded a goal straight away and Ballysteen scored two more points before the break to leave the half time score Athea 1-01, Ballysteen 1-04. It was all to play for in the second half and Philip Collins raised the white flag for Athea after five minutes. Despite having plenty of possession we could not convert it into scores, meanwhile Ballysteen scored a goal and four points to take a commanding lead. John Cotter scored two points late on which left the final score Athea 1-04, Ballysteen 2-08. Team: Kieran Hartnett, Eoin McCarthy, Jonathan Mulvihill, Jason Dalton, Tommy Quaid, William Mullane, Jason Kelly, Sean Ahern, John Geoghegan, Neilo Keane, Brian Ahern, Sean Brouder, Dan McMahon, John Cotter, Philip Collins. Subs: Emmett White, Paul O’Mahony, William Sexton & Roger Ryan.
