County Intermediate Football Championship Round 3:

Athea 0-09        Galbally 4-09

Goals win games and that’s what happened in Clarina on Friday evening last as Galbally got the goals to beat our Intermediate team in the third round of the County Intermediate Football Championship. We had the aid of the wind in the first half, but it was Galbally who opened the scoring with point. Gerard Ahern scored a great point to level matters after great work by Martin Chawke and Raymond Brouder. Two pointed frees from Shane Mulvihill gave us a two point lead after twelve minutes. Galbally fought back and scored two points of their own to level things once again. Shane Mulvihill split the post with another free after Pa Kiely had been fouled. Galbally finished the half stronger and scored a goal and a point to leave the half time score Athea 0-04, Galbally 1-04. The second half was going to be a real test playing into the wind and we started brightly scoring two pointed frees from the boot of the ever reliable Shane Mulvihill. The opposition hit us with a goal and after Shane Mulvihill scored another point from a free they hit us with another goal to go six points up. This took the wind out of our sails and they scored five unanswered points to take a commanding lead. A point each for Gerard Ahern and Shane Mulvihill took our total to nine points and just before the final whistle Galbally scored another goal to leave the final score Athea 0-09, Galbally 4-09. On a bright note Shane Mulvihill gave one of the finest displays of free taking seen in a long time. He scored seven frees out of seven from all angles in windy conditions. Our next Championship match is against Mungret St.Pauls in the first week in August. Team: Timmy Enright, Raymond Brouder, Matthew Tierney, Michael Reidy, Dylan Griffin, Tom Collins, Shane Mulvihill, Martin Chawke, Jamie Collins, Mark O’Connor, Gerard Ahern, Shane Tierney, Gerard Collins, Patrick Ahern, Pa Kiely. Subs: James Ryan (Pa Kiely), Padraic Walsh (Mark O’Connor), Padraig Reidy (Michael Reidy) Pa Kiely (Shane Mulvihill), Dan McMahon, Eoin McCarthy & Tommy Quaid.

Saturday June 6:

West Junior B Football Championship Round 2:

Athea 0-06        St. Kierans 1-10

Our Junior Bs played a very exciting game against a strong St. Kierans team in Glin in Saturday evening last. Scores were hard to come by in the first half, but it was St. Kierans who opened the scoring when they got a lucky goal after five minutes. John Cotter opened our account with a great point after great work by Brian Ahern. It was a very tight first half and our backs were not giving an inch. Midway through the half, St. Kierans got a point of their own. William Mullane scored a super point after one of his many bursts up the field during the game. Just before the break John Cotter exchanged points with St. Kierans when he tapped over a free to leave the half time score Athea 0-03, St. Kierans 1-02. At the start of the second half John cotter scored another free to close the gap but the opposition hit back with three points of their own to extend their lead. Steven McEnery and John Cotter both got a point each to reduce the lead once again, but St .Kierans finished the stronger  and scored five more points to leave the final score Athea 0-06, St. Kierans 1-10. Despite the score line this was a very promising performance and we face Ballysteen in the last round of the Championship in a couple of weeks’ time with every chance of making the knockout stages. Team: Kieran Hartnett, Sean Brouder, Sean Ahern, Killian Donoghue, Colm Hassett, William Mullane, Jonathan Mulvihill, Garry Carroll, John Geoghegan, Neilo Keane, Brian Ahern, Steven McEnery, Tomás Mullane, John Cotter, Philip Collins. Playing teams from Newcastle West and Dromcollogher/Broadford, our boys and girls gave it their all in front of a huge crowd. This young team is improving week by week to the delight of our coaches. Everyone who attended got well deserved treats in the clubhouse before they went home. Thanks to our referees for the day Derek Byrne and Colm Hassett. U12:
Our under 12s played two games recently, the first was in Ballyhahill against Shannon Gaels (Glin/ Gerald Griffins combination). This was a very high scoring game with our boys playing excellent football. The passing, tackling and scoring were of the highest order with every player performing very well. Our second game was away to Askeaton/Ballysteen/Kilcornan in round one of the second phase of the league. In this game our eyes were opened, by an excellent opposition who got on top from the start and never let up. We never got going on the night and were well beaten. On a night when few played to their ability, Dermot Pierse, Gearoid O’ Sullivan and Daire O’ Shea were our best players. We are without Michael Tierney who is out injured at the moment and he is a big loss to us. Panel: Gavin Mulvihill, Gearoid O’ Sullivan, Brandon Finucane, Dermot Pierce, Pierce O’ Brien, T.J. Hunt, Andrew O’ Riordan, Gavin Ambrose, Pauric Enright, Eoin O’ Shea, Conor Mullane, Jack Vaughan, Daire O’ Shea, Fergal Pierse, Adam Byrne and Cillian O’ Connor.
