Saturday April 18:

West Intermediate Championship Football Semi-final:

Athea 1-08         St. Senans 0-09.

We made the short journey to Glin on Saturday evening last as we faced St. Senans in the semi-final of the West Intermediate football Championship. This was a tough physical game which went from end to end for the entire hour. St. Senans opened the scoring with a point, but we were soon level when Kevin Murphy raised the white flag after five minutes. The opposition went ahead again with another point but Mark O’Connor equalized when he scored a great point from thirty yards out. For the next fifteen minutes our boys upped a gear and took the game to St. Senans. Gerard Ahern scored from the penalty spot after Jamie Collins had been fouled, Patrick Ahern scored two great points and Mark O’Connor got his second point of the evening after great work by Kevin Murphy and Jamie Collins. The opposition fought back and scored two points before the break to leave the half time score Athea 1-05, St. Senans 0-04. At the start of the second half we were under pressure and a powerful shot was well saved by Jonathan Fitzgerald and rebounded off one of their forwards for a point. Our backs led by Matthew Tierney were playing out of their skins and denied St. Senans scoring opportunities on several occasions. Shane Mulvihill restored our four point lead from a free and Gerard Ahern added to it shortly afterwards when he split the posts with a great point. The St. Senans team continued to press and scored four unanswered point to leave just one between the teams with five minutes left on the clock. Jonathan Fitzgerald made another great save and super defending led to Denis Greaney racing up the field toe to hand with the ball and he laid it of to Raymond Brouder who drilled it over the bar to give us a two point lead with time almost up. St. Senans tried hard to win the game, but our boys stood the test and won the game on a score line of Athea 1-08, St. Senans 0-09. We now look forward to next weekend when we face Glin in the first round of the Championship. Team: Jonathan Fitzgerald, Michael Reidy, Matthew Tierney, Raymond Brouder (0-1), Denis Greaney, Tom Collins, Shane Mulvihill (0-1), Jamie Collins, Pa Chawke, Dylan Griffin, Mark O’Connor (0-2), Shane Tierney, Gerard Ahern (1-1), Patrick Ahern (0-2), Kevin Murphy (0-1).
