Matches:
Sunday March 8:
Intermediate Football League:
Athea 0-07 Mungret/St. Pauls 1-01
Our Intermediates made the long journey to Mungret to take on the locals in the first round of Division 3 of the County football league. This was our first match under the new Management of Pat Higgins and trainer Colm Hassett and we came away with a three point win on the day. Playing into the wind in the first half, we threatened on several occasions and it was Padraic Walsh who opened the scoring with a well taken point after a great pass from Kevin Murphy. Jamie Collins then set up Kevin Murphy who tapped over from close range to increase our lead. The home side hit back with a well taken goal, but Gerard Ahern scored a free after Kevin Murphy had been fouled to level the match after twelve minutes. Mungret/St. Pauls went ahead again with a well taken point and a super block down by Tom Collins prevented a certain score shortly afterwards. Just before half time Gerard Ahern split the posts to leave it all square at the break, Athea 0-04, Mungret/St. Pauls 1-01. We played extremely well in the second half but found scores hard to come by. Our backs were well on top keeping the home side scoreless for the entire half, our midfield pairing of Jamie Collins and Neilus Hunt were well on top setting up many attacks for our forwards, but we found it hard to shake of the cobwebs and missed several scoring chances. Gerard Ahern tapped over a free after Jamie Collins had been fouled, Jamie was next on the score sheet after great work by Pa Chawke and Gerard Ahern scored our last point to leave the final score Athea 0-07, Mungret/St. Pauls 1-01. Even though we had a number of wides, there were plenty of positives to take from our first match and we play Kilteely/Dromkeen at home this Saturday March 14 at 5pm in the second round of the league in Páirc na nGael. Team: Jonathan Fitzgerald, Padraig Reidy, Matthew Tierney, Raymond Brouder, Shane Tierney, Tom Collins, Michael Reidy, Jamie Collins (0-1), Neilus Hunt, Gerard Collins, Gerard Ahern (0-4), Kevin Murphy (0-1), Padraic Walsh (0-1), Pa Chawke, Pa Kiely. Subs: Denis Greaney (Padraic Walsh), John Geoghegan (Pa Chawke), Jason Dalton (Pa Kiely), Neilo Keane & Dan McMahon.
