U21 Premier Football Championship

Friday December 12:

Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 3-12 Rathkeale/Cappagh 2-11

Our U21’s had a super four point win over Rathkeale/Cappagh in the replay of the Premier football quarter final on a cold Friday night in Mick Neville Park. We got off to a flying start when Kevin Murphy scored a super goal with only twenty seconds gone on the clock. Rathkeale/Cappagh were soon level when they kicked over three points of their own. Pa Delee, Stephen Cahill and Shane Mulvihill all exchanged points with the opposition before Kevin Murphy scored his second goal of the night after great work from Denis Greaney and Cian O’ Sullivan. This gave our boys a big boost and points from Shane Mulvihill, Matthew Brouder and a brace from Stephen Cahill gave us a seven point lead heading for the break. Rathkeale/Cappagh pulled one back before the break to leave the half time score Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 2-07, Rathkeale/Cappagh 0-07. We opened the scoring in the second half when Pa Delee scored a wonderful point. Rathkeale/Cappagh came back into the game again and scored three unanswered points to close the gap to four points. A comeback looked on the cards for the second week in a row, but up stepped Kevin Murphy again and he scored an absolute cracker of a goal to settle all our nerves on the sideline. Points from Stephen Cahill and Maurice Hayes put the result beyond doubt with five minutes left to play. A gallant Rathkeale/Cappagh side did not drop their heads and scored a goal to give them a glimmer of hope but two long range points from Kevin Murphy and Shane Mulvihill restored our seven point lead and a goal late into injury time for the opposition left the full time score Athea/Mountcollins 3-12, Rathkeale/Cappagh 2-11. This was a great team performance and a big improvement on previous weeks. We now play Ballybrown in the semi-final this Friday night December 19 in Mick Neville Park at 8.30pm and having played them already we know there are a very tough physical team. A big effort from our boys is called for so we are hoping for large crowd of supporters to travel to Rathkeale on Friday night to cheer them all the way to the Final. Team: Jonathan Fitzgerald, Timmy Finnegan, Jamie Lenihan, Diarmuid Flanagan, William Mullane, Denis Greaney, Dylan Griffin, Matthew Brouder, Stephen Cahill, Shane Mulvihill, Mark O’Connor , Ryan Carroll, Kevin Murphy, Pa Delee, Cian O’ Sullivan, Kevin O’Mahony, Jason O’ Flaherty, Daniel Brosnahan, Padraig Collins, Johnny Stack, Padraic Walsh & Maurice Hayes.
