Sunday September 28:

U16 Shield Final:

We made the long journey to Claughaun GAA club to take on Na Piarsaigh in the Shield County Final on Sunday last. We started brightly when James Ryan opened the scoring with a point after great work by Ronan Hayes and Liam McAuliffe. We added a second when Ronan Hayes tapped over a free after Sean Ryan had been fouled. Na Piarsaigh got into their stride when they scored a goal and two points without reply but Sean Ryan reduced the gap when he rose the white flag. Two great saves from Conor Fitzgerald in goals kept us in the game but the opposition kept up the pressure and scored three points to increase their lead. For the last ten minutes of the half we played some of our best football and points from Sean Ryan, Mark McAuliffe and James Ryan left the half time score Athea 0-06 Na Piarsaigh 1-06. In second half, Na Piarsaigh upped their game and dominated in all areas of the field. A goal burst midway through the half ended our chances of a comeback but our boys kept going until the end. Ronan Hayes and Jack Vaughan both scored points and James Ryan converted a penalty which he won after a surging run up the middle.

At the final whistle Na Piarsaigh were crowned champions but our boys can hold their heads high as they did extremely well getting to the final after playing some brilliant football throughout the year. Many thanks to all the parents who travelled far and near this year supporting the team and also a big thank you to all those who helped out at the clubhouse afterwards.

Finally the club would like to say a big thank you to Michael Reidy and Kevin O’Keeffe who are stepping down as managers due to other commitments. The time, effort and dedication they have given to the U16 teams over the past number of years have been second to none. It is greatly appreciated by the club and they will be missed.
