Saturday August 30:

U10:

Our U10 footballers travelled to Foynes to take part in the Billy Kirwin Tournament on Saturday afternoon last. We played Askeaton in the first round and it was a very exciting match. Our young team played extremely well and the match finished all square. In extra time the boys gave it their all and eventually won out to qualify for the cup final. After a short break we faced the host team St. Senans in the final, but the effort Athea put in playing the first match told as a strong home team ran out easy winners in the finish. Well done to our U10s and their coaches Sean O’ Shea and James O’ Connor for doing so well on the day. Many thanks to St. Senans for inviting us to the tournament and for the refreshments throughout the day. Team: Gavin Mulvihill, Calum Gleeson, Callum Buckley, James Lee, Michael Walsh, Fergal Pierse, Daire O’ Shea, Evan Curry, Conor Mullane, Dylan Steward, Conor Fitzgerald, Gearoid O’ Sullivan & Cillian O’ Connor.

Sunday August 31:

U16 Shield Semi-final:

Athea 0-13               Kilteely/Dromkeen 1-09

Our U16s have qualified for the Shield County final after a heart stopping semi-final win against Kilteely/Dromkeen in Kildimo on Sunday evening last. A large crowd of Athea supporters travelled the long journey to witness a game as exciting and as hard as the Kerry/Mayo All Ireland semi-final in the Gaelic Grounds the day before. Kilteely/Dromkeen opened the scoring with a point but John Sexton had us on level terms after great work by the very impressive Mark McAuliffe. The Ryan brothers of James and Sean who were outstanding for the entire match combined well to set up Alan Kelly to score a great point. The opposition responded with two points of their own but Sean Ryan raised the white flag to put us back on level terms. JJ Sheehy in goals made a couple of fine saves but could do nothing about the goal Kilteely/Dromkeen got mid-way through the half. JJ then pulled of another great save to keep us in the game. Our backs were under pressure but with TJ Doherty playing out of his skin the opposition found it hard to break us down. Ronan Hayes tapped over a free to close the gap and just before half time James Ryan exchanged points with the opposition to leave the half time score Athea 0-05, Kilteely/Dromkeen 1-04. It was all to play for in the second half and after a few words of encouragement from their coaches Michael Reidy, Kevin O’ Keeffe and Denis Sheahan, our boys came out with only one thing on their mind. Liam McAuliffe closed the gap with a point after a James Ryan forty five, Ronan Hayes levelled the match with a free and James Ryan fired us into the lead when he won the kick out and drove forward and scored a brilliant point. Kilteely/Dromkeen kicked a point of their own but we hit another purple patch with Sean Ryan, Ronan Hayes, John Sexton and James Ryan all scoring points to give us a four point advantage. We conceded another point, but Ronan Hayes spilt the posts with a well taken free to restore our four point advantage.  Kilteely/Dromkeen did not give up, they came back and put us under all sorts of pressure. They kicked three unanswered points to leave just one point between the teams going into the final stages. The supporters were on edge on the side line but the whole team put in a huge effort until the final whistle and we held on to win on a score line of Athea 0-13, Kilteely/Dromkeen 1-09. This was a mighty team effort and we are now preparing for the final against Na Piarsaigh on Sunday September 28. Team: JJ Sheehy, Padraig O’ Sullivan, Micheál Ambrose, Micheál Dalton, Cillian Liston, Conor Fitzgerald, TJ Doherty, James Ryan, Alan Kelly, Liam McAuliffe, Ronan Hayes, Sean Ryan, Mark McAuliffe, Brian Sheahan, John Sexton, Donnacha McEnery, William McEnery, Jack Gleeson & Shane Ambrose.
