Minor:

Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 2-04    Deel Rangers 1-14

Athea/Mountcollins Rangers travelled to Knockaderry on Friday evening last to take on Deel Rangers in the first round of the minor football championship. Deel Rangers were first to score but we soon equalised with a well taken point by Brian O’ Connor. The home side went ahead again and it could have been more only for a brilliant save from a penalty by Kieran Harnett in goals. Soon after, Mikie O’ Mahony set up William Sexton who made no mistake finding the back of the net. Brian O’ Connor was on target again as we exchanged points with the opposition and we extended our lead when the very impressive James Ryan scored a fine individual goal. A couple of points for Deel Rangers and a late point for William Sexton left us with a four point lead at the break. In the second half despite our best efforts we found scores had to come by as the home team piled on the pressure. They scored three quick points to reduce the gap, Brian O’ Connor extended our lead with a point but unfortunately it was all Deel Rangers after this and they ran out winners on the night on a score line of Athea/MountcollinsRangers 2-04,Deel Rangers 1-14. Team: Kieran Harnett, Denny Buckley, Timmy Finnegan, Jason Dalton, Diarmuid Flanagan, WilliamMullane, Tommy Quaid, Gavin O’ Reilly, Padraig Collins, James Ryan, Padraic Walsh, Jack Denihan, Brian O’ Connor, Mikie O’ Mahony, William Sexton, Killian O’ Donoghue, Tony McAuliffe, John Lenihan, Johnny Stack, Jason Kelly & Paul Mahony.

U16s:

Athea 4-6     Shannon Gaels 2-12

Our U16s played their second game of the championship away to Shannon Gaels on Monday evening last. It was a very entertaining game and it was the home team who raced into a three point lead after five minutes. James Ryan opened the scoring for Athea with a well taken point. Shannon Gales added their fourth point but we were soon level when James Ryan was quickest to react to a breaking ball in the square, blasting it to the net. Sean Ryan and William Sexton added a point each, before Brian Sheahan got Athea’s second goal of the game. Shannon Gaels responded well scoring two goals and two points to leave us three points adrift at the break. We started the second half brightly with a point each from Ronan Hayes and Alan Kelly. Ronan was on target again shortly after as his long rang effort ended up in the back of the opposition’s net. Three points for the home side and a Liam McAuliffe point for Athea had the sides level again. We looked to have won the match when Liam scored our fourth goal, but a late surge by Shannon Gales saw them score three late points to leave the match level at the final whistle. Team: JJ SheehyMicheál Dalton, Conor Fitzgerald, Shane Ambrose, TJ Doherty, Micheál Ambrose, CillianListon, Alan Kelly, James Ryan, Sean Ryan, William Sexton, Ronan Hayes, Liam McAuliffe, Brian Sheahan, Jack Vaughan, Jamie O’ Brien, John Sexton, Mark McAuliffe & Padraig O’ Sullivan.
