Athea GAA

Club Membership:

For those who have not yet become members of Athea GAA Club they can do so on Monday night December 9th in the Club house at 8.30pm. This is a great way of supporting the Club at only a cost of €20 for the year. The GAA has the largest membership of any sports organisation in Ireland. When one becomes a member of a GAA club, they become part of the GAA family and part of a great community based organisation that continues to enhance the lives of so many people both young and old.

Sympathy:

The club extends it’s sympathies to the family and friends of the late Johnny Collins from Lower Athea. Although Johnny spent many years in London he kept in touch with what was happening in Athea down through the years. Before emigrating he wore the No.14 jersey playing for Templeathea in the Athea Parish League. He came home in 1968 to support Athea in the County Final and remained very attached to the great team many of whom attended his funeral at the weekend. One of his dying wishes was that  he would be buried with a photo of the great ’68 team. This wish was duly granted to him in Holy Cross cemetery on Saturday. He also had a great love of hurling and he made his last trip to Ireland to see Limerick win in 1973. May he rest in peace.

Old Photographs of Athea GAA:

The Club are still looking for any old photographs or match programmes from anyone that has them in the parish. Photographs from days gone by of underage teams up to Senior level, GAA Parish Socials or any photographs with a connection to the GAA club will be scanned and saved digitally,  then returned to the owner. Contact John Hunt, Lal Browne or Jacqueline O’ Connor for further details.

Athea Coiste na nÓg:

Medal Presentation:

Con Colbert Community hall is the place to be this Sunday evening December 8 at 6.30pm as our County winning U14 and U15 football teams will be presented with their medals. A Limerick Senior footballer will be in attendance and there will be hot food and refreshments served afterwards. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

2014 Calendar:

Our 2014 Calendar will be on sale soon and once again it will be bursting with team and action photographs which were taking through out the year of all our underage teams.

 LAST MAN STANDING
The club are once again running the very popular Last Man Standing Competition. Last weekend was week eight and we had seven still standing but that’s now down to six after we had one faller thanks to Liverpool’s shock loss away to Hull City. This week we have a full midweek programme in the Premier League so after next weekend’s games we could have a winner or maybe it will run and run. Prize money for the first Last Man Standing Competition is €300 and it is being sponsored by The Top of the Town and the club would like to thank Betty and Johnny for the sponsorship. There is also a sellers prize of €50 for the person that sells the winning line.
