Athea Coiste na nÓg:

This is the time of year when on the field action has finished. All ages from U6’s to U16’s have now finished training and matches. The only outstanding match is the U12 parish league which will hopefully take place this weekend after being postponed due to the bad weather on Sunday last. The Coiste committee and coaches are still busy, already putting plans together for next year, putting the finishing touches to the much sought after 2014 calendar and also planning our table quiz which will be happening in December at the Top of the Town. More details to follow.

Athea United Soccer

PREMIER DIVISION (Sunday, November 10th)
Athea Utd       (1) 4   G Ahern (pen), T Collins, K Murphy, C O’Connor
Broadford Utd    (1) 3
Last Sunday morning we hosted league leaders Broadford Utd at The Vales knowing a tough contest was in store as they have won all their six league games to date. Our previous meeting with Broadford in the top flight saw us draw three all at home with them and losing narrowly by a single goal in the away fixture. After the four one win away to Glin the previous Sunday another good result here would see us move away from the bottom end of the table and this is what transpired after we scored another four goals with the league leaders scoring three. However their third goal came in the last minute of stoppage time.

Conditions weather-wise were atrocious with persistent heavy rain throughout but despite this both sides gave us plenty good football on a pitch that held up very well as usual. There were chances at both ends with both keepers having to show great concentration and handling ability in the very wet condition. The opening goal came on the half hour mark when a Broadford free kick from the side line was played into the penalty area where it eluded everybody and went all the way to the net. A poor goal for us to concede given how well we had done defensively up to this. By half time we were level and deservedly so when Gerard Ahern converted from the penalty spot after Jamie Collins was fouled.

We started the second half on the attack and pined Broadford back and forced five corners in succession and from the fifth of thee, taken by Ahern the ball came to the back post where centre half Tom Collins sent an unstoppable header to the net. Eight minutes into the second half and we were ahead for the first time and six minutes later more inventive play saw us extend our lead. Good play involving Ahern, Kevin O’Keeffe and Maurice Hayes saw the ball been played into the feet of Kevin Murphy who wrong footed his marker and shot low to the net. We were in the driving seat now with our midfield closing down the opposition and our defence dominating, Mathew Tierney at left full playing his best game in a while but indeed our defence hardly put a foot wrong. The visitors pulled a goal back on seventy two minutes from an indirect free kick inside the penalty area but we didn’t panic and two minutes later great play down the right by O’Keeffe saw him cut inside a defender and square for Shane Mulvihill but the latters shot just lacked the power to get the ball past the keeper. On eighty five minutes we got breathing space when Cillian O’Connor took advantage of a mistake by the keeper to score into an empty net to make it four two. Broadford got one back in the last minute of stoppage time to make it four three but theres no doubt Athea were deserving winners as the league leaders lost both their unbeaten and 100% records in one go.

LAST MAN STANDING

The club are once again running the very popular Last Man Standing Competition for the coming season and we had week six last weekend where we had thirty one (31) left standing. However we lost almost two thirds of these as yet again Chelsea have let a big number of people down. Next weekend we have no games due to the International Weekend so fixtures resume for the eleven (11) remaining players. Prize money for the first Last Man Standing Competition is €300 and it is being sponsored by The Top of the Town and the club would like to thank Betty and Johnny for the sponsorship. There is also a sellers prize of €50 for the person that sells the winning line.
