Matches:

Friday September 13:

U6:

Our U6’s played their very first match of the year last Friday evening against Feohanagh/Castlemahon in Páirc na nGael. For many of the twenty one boys and girls that togged out it was their first time putting on the maroon and white jersey of Athea. As the ball travelled up and down the field the children ran tirelessly throughout the whole match trying to get onto the ball. After the final whistle went both teams got well deserved treats for dishing up a very entertaining match for all the parents and grandparents that had travelled to see the stars of the future play. Panel: Jamie, Collins, Jack Sexton, Josh Woulfe, Courtney Hunt, Molly Hunt, Alex Quinn, Ella Ahern, Tomás Ahern, Sean Twomey, Adam Somers, Jamie Mahony, Eric Barrett, Fionn Histon, Amy Steward, Emma Scanlon, Stephanie Ambrose, Tony Ahern, Jamie Flynn, Jim Ahern & Tom Collins.

U8’s:

Our  U8’s played Feohanagh/Castlemahon on Friday evening last in a closely contested match. Páirc na nGael was particularly busy that night as there were also matches for our U6’s and U10’s. The team is improving with every match and the benefit of regular training and practise are starting to show. The match was refereed by our own Roger Ryan who officiated a very sporting contest between two evenly matched sides. Team: Callum Buckley, James Lee, Michael Walsh, Bríd Hunt, Ciarán Hunt, Evan Curry, Calum Gleeson, Ailísa Ahern, KatieByrne, Niamh Ambrose, James Hunt, Tomás Ahern, Jim Ahern, Ellen Smith, Dylan Steward, Cillian O’Connor and Clodagh Scanlon.

U10:

The under 10’s had Feohanagh

Castlemahon and Knockaderry as visitors to Athea on Friday last for a blitz. We had our largest panel since the start of the summer, so we divided into two teams whic

h we called Athea/Dublin and Athea/Mayo. In the first round of the blitz Athea/Dublin played Feohanagh/Castlemahon while Athea/Mayo played a very strong Knockaderry. In the second round we switched places and Dublin played Knockaderry while Mayo played Feohanagh/Castlemahon. In all the games we had loads of possession, Andrew O’ Riordan was like Aidan O’Shea of Mayo with his display of fielding in midfield. Some of our efforts at scoring wasn’t great with us shooting for points from too far out and going for goals in crowded goal mouths when easy points were there for the taking. Overall they were two very exciting games with end to end football which the large crowd enjoyed. Pierce O’Brien played one of his best ever games having showed great improvement over the summer months. Paraic Enright is another player who has come on great this year as has Gavin Ambrose. Michael Tierney, Eoin O’Shea and Brandon Finucane continue to impress in every game they play. After the games all players got treats and the parents got tea and coffee and food in the Club House. There will be no under ten training this week but we may have a match at home on Monday night next September 23rd. Panel: Gearóid O’Sullivan, Daire O’Shea, Tara Histon, Brandon Finucane, Andrew O’Riordan, Shonagh O’Mahony, Meadhbh Donovan, Eoin O’Shea, Pierce O’Brien, Molly Pepper Carr,

Gavin Mulvihill, Paraic Enright, Fergal Pierse, TJ Hunt, Dermot Pierse, Amy Ryan, Shauna Sweeney, Adam Byrne, Michael Tierney, Sarah Scanlon, Molly Ahern, Conor Mullane & Gavin Ambrose.

The Club would like to thank Roger Ryan, Denis Greaney, Mark O’ onnor, Kevin O’Keeffe and David O’Connor who refereed our matches and we would also like to thank all those who helped out in any way.

Saturday September 14:

U12’s:

Athea U12’s had a most enjoyable day out last Saturday as they took part in the final day blitz which was held in Mick Neville Park. Although we were well beaten by Monaleen, we put up a great performance against Ballylanders. We had plenty of the skills of football displayed through out the two matches with the block down a key feature of our play. All our boys and girls got live 95 FM t-shirts and for their great efforts on the day, they were all treated to an ice cream cone in Rathkeale. Under twelve football is now finished for the year but we may have a return match against Finuge next week. Many thanks to all the boys, girls and their parents for making the great effort to travel to all their matches through out the year. Team: Evan Wallace, Alex McEldowney, Grace Ryan, David O’Connor, Thomas McEnery, Claire Carmody, Danny Brady, Jack O’Connor, Sarah O’Connor, Eoin Sheahan, Aidan Curry, Sean Sheehan, Jack Hunt, Luke Gleeson & Laura Dalton.

Monday September 16:

U14 Shield Semi Final:

Athea 12–5   Shamrock Gaels 1–4

It was goals galore in Páirc na nGael on Monday evening last as a classy team performance by our under fourteens saw them ease into the shield county final. In a match totally dominated by our young boys it was John Sexton who scored the first of our twelve goals after he gathered a Sean Ryan free at the edge of the box and he made no mistake sticking it into the corner of the net. Soon after Liam McAuliffe rose the white flag with a well taken point. We then went on a goal scoring spree with Andy Ahern scoring two and one each for Sean Ryan and Micheál Ambrose. Our backs had very little to do but what ever came their way, they were more than capable of dealing with it. Two points for Sean Ryan and a goal for Liam McAuliffe left us well ahead as we approached half time. Shamrock Gaels did stage a mini revival as they scored three points just before the break. The second half was no different with our mid-field pairing of Sean Ryan and Micheál Ambrose combining well for Sean to score a goal. Brian Sheahan was next on the score sheet as he rose the green flag and Shane Dalton followed this with a great point. Further goals from Brian Sheahan, Alan Kelly and a super long range effort from David O’Sullivan deceived everyone and ended up in the back of the net. Brian Sheahan finished our scoring with a well taken point. With minutes remaining Shamrock Gaels scored a goal to leave the final score Athea 12-5, Shamrock Gaels 1-4. We now look forward in great anticipation to the County final which will be played in the coming weeks and hopefully a repeat performance will see us victorious. Team:  Timothy Tierney, Jack Vaughan, Shane Ambrose, Mark McAuliffe, Micheál Dalton, Cillian Liston, Daniel McEldowney, Sean Ryan, Micheál Ambrose, Shane Dalton, Alan Kelly, Liam McAuliffe, Andy Ahern, Brian Sheahan, John Sexton, Joseph Dalton, Cathal O’Brien, Jack Gleeson, David Sheahan & David O’Sullivan.
