Intermediate Championship Round 3:

Athea 2–12 Croom 2–7

Athea Intermediates played a must win third round championship match against Croom on Sunday evening last in Newcastle West. Fresh from their success in last weeks West final our boys were ready for action. We were first on the scoreboard as Pa Ahern tapped over our first point of the match. Croom soon equalized but Denis Greaney blasted the ball to the roof of the net from a tight angle to score a super goal after some great work by corner forward Ger Ahern. Our defence were well on top as Padraig and Michael Reidy were playing a blinder in the back line. Denis was on hand to score two points shortly afterwards, along with another point from Ger Ahern to go six points up after ten minutes. The opposition scored a goal after a lapse in our defence to bring them back into the game. Pa Ahern then had a goal chance but he blasted it over the bar. Kevin Murphy, Ger Ahern and Pa Ahern all exchanged points with Croom to leave us four points up at the break. The second half was much closer, but two early points from Ger Ahern gave us a comfortable lead. Croom rallied and scored three points to Athea’s single point from Pa Ahern. Ger Ahern tapped over a free and shortly after Pa Ahern made sure of victory when his shot went low past the keeper to the corner of the net. A late goal from Croom was not enough and Athea held out for a much deserved win on a scoreline of Athea 2-12, Croom 2-7.

Team: Timmy Enright, Michael Reidy, Padraig Reidy, Shane Tierney, Martin Chawke, Paul Collins, Raymond Brouder, Tom Collins, Jamie Collins, Kevin Mahony, Pa Ahern, Denis Greaney, Kevin Murphy, Mark O’Connor, Gerard Ahern, Jonathan Fitzgerald, Matthew Tierney, Neilus Hunt, Dylan Griffin, Brian McKenna, Gary Vaughan, Kevin O’Keeffe, Patrick Chawke & Darren Murphy.

Friday August 9 & Monday August 12:

U8’s:

Our U8’s were busy last week playing two matches at home in Páirc na nGael. Their first was against Glin, the second was against St. Senans and in both matches the boys and girls did extremely well. A huge crowd of supporters lined both sides of the field for the two matches and all the parents and grandparents were delighted to see the two very exciting matches. Their skill levels were high and they are improving greatly with every match they play and every training session they attend. Hopefully all the boys and girls will keep up the good work by practicing at home and attending training.

Team: Calum Gleeson, Callum Buckley, Brid Hunt, Ellen Smith, James Hunt, Dylan Steward, Donnchadh Barrett, Clodagh Scanlon, Evan Curry, James Lee, Ciaran Hunt, Cillian O’Connor, Tomás Ahern, Michael Walsh, Becky Broderick, James Broderick & Rebecca Collins.

Monday August 5:

U16’s:

Athea 6–12  Dromcollogher/Broadford 0–6

Dromcollogher was the venue as our U16’s travelled there to take on the locals in the league. Having beaten Adare last time out, another good performance was expected and we were not disappointed as these young boys dominated this match from start to finish. We raced into a ten point lead thanks to goals from Brian O’ Connor, James Ryan and Sean Ryan. Dromcollogher/Broadford came back into the game and it was point for point until the break with Padraic Walsh and Joey Kelly also getting in on the score sheet. With a comfortable lead going into the second half, an expected come back by the opposition did not materialise and Athea piled on the pressure for the remainder of the match. Everyone of the six backs Killian O’ Donoghue, Jason Dalton, Conor Fitzgerald, Paul Mahony, Tommy Quaid and Jason Kelly played brilliantly conceding only one point in this half and even though Lorcan McAuliffe had little to do in goals when he was called upon he made a great save. Jack Denihan was prominent at centre forward picking up a lot of breaking ball and linking up with the rest of the forwards. There were great scores taken by our midfield and forwards once again Brian, James, Sean and Padraic adding to their tally, William Sexton and Brian Sheahan also got in on the scoring act with goal and three points between them, leaving the final score Athea 6-12, Dromcollogher/Broadford 0-6.

Team: Lorcan McAuliffe, Killian O’Donoghue, Jason Dalton, Conor Fitzgerald, Paul Mahony, Tommy Quaid, Jason Kelly, Padraic Walsh, Brian O’Connor, William Sexton, Jack Denihan, James Ryan, Brian Sheahan, Joey Kelly, Sean Ryan, JJ Sheehy, Tony McAuliffe, Micheál Dalton & Jack Vaughan.
