Matches:

Thursday July 4:

Minors:

Feale Rangers 3–16 Shannon Gaels 0–7

Feale Rangers got their season off to a great start with a comfortable win over Shannon Gales in the West minor A championship in Páirc na nGael on Thursday evening last. The Athea/Mountcollins combination laid down an early marker as they raced into a three point lead in as many minutes thanks to Padraig Collins, Stephen Cahill and Gary Vaughan. We continued to dominate the half  with Jamie O’Brien, Padraic Walsh and James Ryan getting in on the scoring act kicking some wonderful points. A goal each for Gary Vaughan and Conor Moroney left the half time score Feale Rangers 2-10, Shannon Gales 0-2. The second half was no different as our defence was well on top all through the game and Feale Rangers totally outplayed their opponents. A James Ryan free early in the half was soon followed by two super points by half back Dylan Griffin. Conor Moroney scored his second goal of the match mid-way through the half as Shannon Gaels had no answer for a well organised Feale rangers outfit. Three more points before the final whistle left the full time score 3-16 to 0-7. Team: Kieran Harnett, Dan Mullane, Jonathan Fitzgerald, Jason O’Flaherty, Dylan Griffin, Jamie Lenihan, William Mullane, Gary Vaughan, Stephen Cahill, Padraic Walsh, Conor Moroney, James Ryan, William Sexton, Jamie O’Brien, Padraig Collins, Jason Dalton, Jack Denihan & Brian O’Connor.

Athea United Soccer

VICTORY SOCIAL

Athea Utd had a great season at junior level when winning three trophies, the As coming from behind in the league to win the title after a playoff while the Bs won the Division 3 League & Cup Double. This is historic in that it’s the first time a junior side in the club ever did the double though the feat has being achieved before an underage level. So to celebrate this seasons success the club will be holding a Victory Social in The Devon Inn Hotel, Templeglantine next Friday night week, July 19th. There will be a three course meal while music afterwards will be by DJ Donnacha. Guests to be seated for 7.30pm.

Tickets are only €25 and are limited and may be purchased from the following club members – Clare Ryan, Dennis Murphy, John Geoghegan and Bobby Barrett. Tickets can also be purchased at Brouder’s Shop here in Athea.

JERSEYS

All underage managers are asked to return all playing jerseys from last season to Tim O’Riordan as soon as possible.

2013/2014 SEASON

We are now making plans for the 2013/14 season. The club, where it can cater for players, will be entering teams in the various underage divisions for next season. With this in mind the club are interested in persons interested in managing teams that the club will be catering for and entering in the LDSL for next season. Persons interested in being managers or indeed helping out in any way are asked to contact any member of the committee

Athea Fishing Club

It’s that time of year again for our young anglers to take out their rods, dig their worms and pack their lunch.  The annual kids fishing competitions will take place this Saturday, July 13th in Ballyhass Lake, Mallow.  There are 3 trophies up for grabs on the day, U10, U12 and U16.   Children need to be of school going age to participate, and should any child in Juniors, Seniors or First class want to try their hand at fishing, we would ask that a parent accompany them on the trip for safety reasons.  All children must hold a valid fishing permit on the day.  These are available at Collins’ and Brouder’s shop – €15 for Juvenile or €25 for a family which will cover all children in that family.

This year it will be compulsory that any child participating on the day must either have their own fishing rod or have the money with them to hire the rod themselves in Ballyhass.  The club will no longer be able to pay for rod hire for any child. Rods are available to hire at the cost of €10 and worms can be bought for €4.

Bus will leave Athea village Saturday morning at 10.00am at a cost of €5 per child.  The bus will stop in Carrigkerry at the petrol station en route that morning.  Parents are being asked to provide a packed lunch, plenty of sunscreen and drinks.  Snacks will be given in Ballyhass and upon return to the village that evening we will be going to Brown Joe’s bar for presentations and food.  All parents are welcome to join us there for the presentations and all kids that participate will receive a medal.  We are hoping that there will be a good turn out on the day so kids get digging for those worms and we will see ye Saturday morning.

Finally, on a much sadder note, the fishing club would like to express its most sincere sympathy to the family of Anna May Sweeney of Hillside Drive on her sudden and unexpected passing at the weekend.  May the light of heaven shine on her and may her soul rest in peace.
