It was an impossible evening for football and all involved have to be complimented for their efforts. We bid farewell to two well known singers, and entertainers in recent weeks. Slim Whitman the American great was 89 years old and a legend in country music, and a great favourite with Irish fans. His best known songs were Rose-Marie, and Indian Love Call. He was famous for his yodelling songs as well and will be sadly missed by his legion of fans.  Mattie Weldon from Bunmahon in Waterford was a well known entertainer around the Munster area. He performed in Knockaderry Community Centre on a number of occasions, and he was only 59 years old. He was best known for his songs about our famous hurling stars including Christy Ring, John Doyle, DJ Carey, and many lovely songs about his native Waterford. He received lots of airtime on the local Radio Stations, and featured on Around the Fireside with Jimmy Reidy on C103 Radio Station. He had a unique singing voice and he is a great loss to the entertainment scene. May they rest in Peace.

Carrigkerry / Old Mill Community Employment Scheme, with a supervisor and 16 participants concluded their one year term on Friday 21st June. It was another busy year for all involved in maintaining villages, school grounds, community centre, park areas, and playing fields. A new one year extension has been granted and this commenced on Monday 24th June. The delay in Garda vetting for new participants to come on the schemes remains a big problem and places remain unfilled in many areas. This leads to a reduction in the material grant the sponsors can claim, which in turn can lead to a reduction in the work that can be done.  A universal Garda vetting scheme should be introduced for all citizens to cut out this nonsense we have at present, which suits the Government not having to pay an extra €20 per week to each new person joining the schemes.
