The death has taken place of Joseph ‘Joe’ Doody Tiermore, Shanagolden, and late of Glensharrold, Carrigkerry suddenly on his way to Limerick Regional Hospital on Tuesday  2nd April. Husband of the late Mary Catherine who passed away in August 2011 he was a retired forestry worker and he was 79 years old. He attended Kilcolman N.S. and worked with local farmers, as well as with the E.S.B. installing the power lines to the district in the fifties/sixties. Joe was a hard worker in bog and meadow all his life, and was also a gravedigger, who was acknowledged as a character, who was well known around the West Limerick area. His passions in life resolved around his family work sports, wrenboys, and a few drinks, in company. Joe and family moved from Glensharrold to Shanagolden in the late seventies, and he settled into his new surroundings but he still kept the links open with friends and former neighbours. Joe Doody’s heart remained in his native Glensharrold despite his exile and during meetings he would recall with great joy the happy times spent there. He was a loyal and true wrenboy who was always the first person to arrive on Saint Stephens Day to hunt the wren with the Glensharrold group. He never spared the goatskin even smoking a cigarette as he performed.  He was a passionate follower of Saint Kieran’s, G.A.A. Club and a thorn in the side of opposition less experienced free takers and dubious referees.

Reposing at Ferris’s Funeral Home Shanagolden, on Friday from 6.00pm, The Glensharrold Wrenboys formed a guard of honour as his remains were removed to Saint Senan’s Church Shanagolden. Fr Noonan assisted by Fr O’Leary celebrated his Funeral Mass, on Saturday with family members assisting in the readings, prayers of the faithful, and offertory gifts. Symbols associated with Joe’s life, family photo, bodhrán, turf, Hurley and football, were taken to the Altar before the Mass commenced. The local choir’s choice of music and song was uplifting and large crowds attended the Mass as well as the removal and burial. The burial took place in sunny and scenic Kilmoylan Cemetery on Saturday 6th April.  The Glensharrold Wrenboys and friends gave Joe a rousing send off at the graveside, which was his wish. We will all miss his company and comments, but delighted in having knowing him and the contribution he made to life, in sporting and entertainment terms in rural Ireland. We extend our sympathy to sons Michael, Patrick, James, daughters Bridget, Marie Griffin, son –in-law Pat, daughter –in-law Angharad, brother-in-law Donie, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, friends kind neighbours. May he rest in Peace.
