Athea United Soccer

U10 Cup 1st Round (February 24th)
Athea Utd     (3) 3   Eoin O’Shea, Gavin Ambrose, own goal

Abbeyfeale Utd B  (0) 1

Our tens progressed to the second round of the tens cup after a deserved three one win at home to Abbeyfeale Utd B last Saturday morning. All the Athea goals came in the first half and all from set pieces. The opening goal came when a corner from the right was played to the back post where a defender under pressure put the ball into his own net. Athea continued to press and from another corner Eoin O’Shea drilled home a fine goal from the edge of the area inside the left hand post. Having scored the previous week against Glantine Gavin Ambrose got his second in as many games with a quality strike that gave the keeper no chance to make it three nil before half time. The second half was closer with the visitors getting one back with five minutes left but Athea were always in control of this cup tie and in round two we will be away to Granagh Utd A. Best for Athea were Gearoid O’Sullivan, Gavin Ambrose, Brandon Finucane and Eoin O’Shea.

Team: TJ Hunt, Gearoid O’Sullivan, Brandon Finucane, Michael Tierney, Gavin Ambrose, Eoin O’Shea, Daire O’Shea, Paric Enright, Amy Ryan,  Pierse O’Brien, Andrew O’Riordan, Conor Mullane. Referee Donie Wallace

Division 3 League Cup SF 2nd Leg (February 24th)
Athea Utd B    (1) 3   Steven McEnery (2), Mark Horgan.
Ballingarry B   (0) 0

(Athea Utd B win 7-2 on agg)

Last Sunday the Bs secured their place in the division three league cup final after a three nil win at home to Ballingarry B in the second leg of the league cup semi-final, thus giving us a seven two aggregate win. Like I said last week we had to be focussed and show plenty concentration in order to progress to the final and this we did and once Steven McEnery put us in front on thirty two minutes the outcome wasn’t in doubt. Prior to our opening goal we had come very close when Mike McCarthy hit a brilliant free kick from thirty yards smacked off the crossbar. In general that first half was very even with the visitors having one good effort on goal that was well saved my Timmy Enright. The second half was more open as the visitors had to chase the tie and this left them open to counter attacks from the home side. This is how it turned out as our two second half goals came from such scenarios, the first of these
coming from sub Mark Horgan as he beat the keeper to a through ball with the third goal scored by McEnery who showed composure to take the ball around the keeper and fire home his second of the game. So overall a deserved win and one which sees the Bs into another league cup final where we will meet Knockaderry.

Team: Timmy Enright, Raymond Brouder, Tom Greaney Sean McGrath, Jason Quille, Gary Carroll, Pa Kiely, Eoghan Nash, John Geoghegan, Mike McCarthy, Steven McEnery. Subs used Shane Mulvihill, Mark Horgan and Beanie Referee Jim Molyneaux..

U8 Friendly (February 24th)
Carrig Cel      (1) 3   Athea Utd      (0) 0

Last Sunday we played away to Carrig Celtic in an eights friendly. Athea started well but before half time Carrig went in front and it remained one nil to the homeside at half time. Athea had a decent amount of the ball in the second half but couldn’t beat the Carrig keeper while they scored two more goals. Well done to both teams.

Team: Fergal Pierce, James Lee, James Broderick, Callum Buckley, Dylan Steward, Evan Curry, Cillian O’Connor, James Hunt, Ciaran Hunt.

The club would like to extend its deepest sympathy to the Quaid Family, Dirreen on the sudden passing of Thady Quaid last week. A strong GAA household. Thady won a County Junior Championship with Athea back in 1963. The final was incidentally played in the spring of ‘64. His brothers Tomas & Denis and his sons Tim & Mark have all worn the maroon and white and won honours with Athea down through the years.

Community Games – Art Competition  & Handwriting Competitions

We would like to thank Margaret Watters and her staff for their support in hosting the recent Art and Handwriting competitions. We received 115 entries from the school pupils and were delighted with this amount of entries.  This would not have been possible without the cooperation of the school and staff.

We have had the entries independently judged and details of the winners are below.  The winners will go forward to represent Athea in the next round of the competition.

Church Gate Collection:

We would like to thank all those who contributed to our Church gate collection fundraiser last week-end, we raised €808.30, and would also like to thank all those who helped out with the collection.
