Bit’s & Bob’s

Congratulations and the very best of luck and happiness go to Edel Sheehan (Daughter of Mairead and Eddie) of Toureen who on Saturday last was married to Sean Lyons (son of Maudie and Johnny) of Ballyguiltenane by Fr Tom Crawford at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Glin. A great day was enjoyed by everyone at the reception in the Ballygarry House Hotel in Tralee.

Wishing all those sitting their Junior and Leaving Cert exams this week all the very best of luck – it’s indeed a stressful time for them, but hopefully they will get through it easily enough.

A huge crowd supported the fundraiser for Pieta House at Collins’ on Sunday evening last, where ‘the pig on the spit’ was a great attraction. Well done to the organisers and all those who supported the fundraiser.

As I ‘put pen to paper’ this Monday night writing these few lines, the rain has started again unfortunately, after a not too pleasant Bank Holiday weekend. However it’s noticeable that many more have taken to the roads on bikes, walking and lots more running, so despite the rain , it’s better off not to dwell on it too much – just get out with those umbrellas and take to the roads – “Slí na Sláinte “ is waiting for you!

I read that the newly formed Tidy Towns Committee are very anxious that everyone in the village, and indeed on the outskirts, give them their full support and help to make Athea a cleaner, nicer and tidier place to live in. We must support their request; after all it’s our town/village. This means picking up bottles, cans, litter etc that others have thrown about. There’s lots of weeding to be done in the flowerbeds up and around the Giants Footprint, the bridge needs to be “de mossed”, nothing that a bit of ‘elbow grease’ couldn’t rectify.  With many unemployed and now students on holidays it would be a rewarding way and self-satisfying by lending a hand to improve the look of Athea – indeed food for thought.

Well done to Athea students Tara Zgagga, Ryan Carroll and Tara Finucane who recently received awards at the Graduation ceremony in Scoil Ide agus Ioseph in Abbeyfeale – Ryan receiving a sports award, Tara Finucane – student of the year award and Tara Zgagga received an exceptional achievement award – well done to each and every one of them.

Thought for the week:

“One never notices what has been done, one only notices what remains to be done”.
