Reidy Cup

Athea Utd A   (1) 2     Ger Collins, Cillian O’Connor

Pallaskenry    (1) 1

We opened our defence of the Reidy Cup with a home win over Pallaskenry that was more clear cut than the scoreline suggests. Ger Collins with his first of the season put us ahead but by half time the visitors had managed to be on level terms. We had plenty of chances in the second half to put the game to bed before Cillian O’Connor restored our lead which we held on to quite comfortably. In the second round we will be at home to Granagh Utd.

Athea U16s who played Castletown-Ballyagran in the County Quarter-Final

Matches:

Fixtures:

County Quarter Final:

Sunday 9th of October:
Under 16’s:

Athea U-16’s took to the field in Ballyagran on a very windy Sunday morning last to take on Castletown/Ballyagran in the County Quarter final. Even though Athea were playing with the wind in the first half, it was the opposition who opened the scoring with a point. Athea then settled and shortly after were awarded a free on the 21, which James Ryan put over the bar for our first score. Soon after it was the locals who scored again, when after a great block down by William Mullane in the backs the ball broke to one of their forwards who then scored a goal. Athea started to take control and the very impressive James Ryan scored 2 great points before a superb free from Gary Vaughan from way out in the wing sailed over the bar to level the match. Just before half time a great move from Athea ended up with Jamie O’Brien chasing a ball into the square which he punched to the net to put us ahead at half time 1-4 to 1-1. In the second half playing against the wind we were under pressure from the off, but some fantastic defending kept them at bay and despite this, we were first to score in the second half when Gary Vaughan kicked over a great point. After this Castletown/Ballyagran started to pile on the pressure again and scored 3 unanswered points to leave us just one point ahead. But our defence led by Jonathan Fitzgerald and Roger Carmody stood strong and dealt with everything that was thrown at them, backed up by Kieran Harnett who made some fantastic saves at crucial times in goals. Soon after, a Padraic Walsh point, scored at a vital stage of the match put us 2 points ahead, a final flurry by the opposition yielded only a point which left us with great victory and a place in the County Semi-Final on a score line of Athea 1-6, Castletown/Ballyagran 1-5. This game proved to be a great team performance which saw them through at the finish. Well done to all. Team: Kieran Harnett, Jonathan Fitzgerald, Dan Mullane, Padraic Walsh, Jamie O’ Brien, Gary Vaughan, Roger Carmody, William Mullane, Jason Daly O’ Flaherty, Jack Denihan, James Ryan, Joey Kelly, Thomas Sexton, Peter O’ Connor, William Sexton, Jason Dalton & Ronan Hayes.
