U/19 League Cup

Athea Utd    (0) 3       Daniel Daly (2), Mark Horgan

We got our first win in the U/19 League Cup with a deserved three nil win at home to Ncw Rovers last Saturday afternoon. All the goals came in the second half with Daniel Daly getting a brace and Mark Horgan adding a third. In truth we probably should have won by more as we were on top for most of the game and had some other good chances to add to our tally.

Team: Paul Kennedy, Kevin Murphy, David Sheehan, Mark O’Connor, Jamie Sheehan, Maurice Hayes, Daniel Daly, Aaron O’Connor, Ryan Carroll, Mark Horgan, Ian Murphy.

Youths Division 1

Ncw Rovers (0) 1

Athea Utd    (4) 5      Maurice Hayes (pen), Ian Murphy (2), Daniel Daly, Kevin Murphy

The youths were impressive winners away to Ncw Rovers last Wednesday evening with the game over as a contest at half time when we were four goals to the good. Maurice Hayes put us ahead from the penalty spot after the speedy Liam O’Connor was taken out in full flight and this was followed by quick fire goals from the impressive Ian Murphy and another from skipper Daniel Daly to put us in control. Just before the break it was game, set and match when Kevin Murphy squeezed home a beauty inside the near post. Early in the second half the homeside pulled one back but we responded quickly when Ian Murphy got his second of the game. Jonathan Fitzgerald then produced a super full length save while Ryan Carroll hit the bar at the other end as we finished strongly to claim a deserved three points.

Team: Jonathan Fitzgerald, Kevin Murphy, Jamie Sheehan, Mark O’Connor, David Sheehan, Liam O’Connor, Maurice Hayes, Ryan Carroll, Michael Woods, Ian Murphy, Daniel Daly. Subs used: Gary Vaughan, Jason O’Flaherty and Michael Mullane.

Matches:
Under 8’s:

The under 8 footballers travelled to Foynes on Friday night last for a blitz involving St. Senan’s, Gerald Griffins, Glin and Athea. We had 13 players and they all played very well even though it rained heavy at times. We played four matches in total and you could see the players improving all the time. It was great to see some of the players able to kick the ball with their weaker leg when their strong side was blocked.  The games were run off quickly with no waiting around between matches, so well done to St.Senans who hosted the blitz and had treats afterwards for the kids. We will have more matches soon against St.Kieran’s and possibly St. Senan’s. Panel: Gavin Ambrose, Michael Tierney, Brandon Finucane, Eoin O’ Shea, Andrew O’ Riordan, Josh Mullally, Pierce O’ Brien, Paraic Enright, T.J. Minors:

Congratulations to the Feale Rangers Minors (Athea/Mountcollins) on winning the West Limerick Minor A football championship on Sunday night before a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters. The conditions were wet and ball control difficult against tight marking opposition, Cois Sionna Gaels. Rangers were up 0–3 to 0–1 after a low scoring first half, Cois Sionna drew level at 3 points each, but then Rangers got on top through sheer hard work to score the next 6 points to win 0–9 to 0–3. See full match report and team photo in sports pages.

West Minor A Final

The victorious Feale Rangers Team (Athea & Mountcollins) who won the West U-18 title last Sunday with trainer Noel Barry

Feale Rangers 0 09     Cois Sionna 0 03.

The Athea – Mountcollins amalgamation captured the West u18 title last Sunday evening in Glin. The game was played in atrocious conditions but Rangers were full value for their win. We led three points to one at the break after dominating much of the half. Second half points from Pa Delee, Maurice Hayes, Kevin O’Mahony  and Stephen Cahill saw us run out comfortable winners. Johnathan Fitzgerald was rock solid in goals. Mark Horgan and Mark O’Connor dominated the full back line. Denis Greaney as usual was excellent at centre back. So too was Thomas Sexton who along with the other wing back Stephen Cahill are still u16. Kevin O’Mahony won a huge amount of ball at midfield and kicked a great point. Up front Shane Mulvihill again showed what an intelligent player he is, while Kevin Murphy and Maurice Hayes’ pace and skill were a constant threat to the opposition. Ryan Carroll came off the bench and made a significant contribution.

We now progress to the county semi-final. Well done to Noel Barry who had his side very well prepared. Well done also to selectors Micheál Long and Seamus O’Connell.

Team: J Fitzgerald, M Horgan, M O’Connor, W Finnegan, T Sexton, D Greaney, S Cahill, M Broudair, K O’Mahony, C O’Sullivan, S Mulvihill, P Delee, K Murphy, J O’Mahony, M Hayes. Subs: R Carroll, J O’Sullivan, Michael Mullane, Liam O’Brien. Dylan Murphy and Gary Vaughan were unavailable due to injury.

Captain Pa Delee who received the cup from Johnny Walsh – West Board.

County Intermediate Championship

Athea 1 11 Mountcollins 1 12.

A late goal denied us victory in Abbeyfeale last Friday night. However, we still qualify for the county quarter final thanks to Cappamore beating Gerald Griffin’s. This was a game we really should have won, we led 1 06 to 0 07 at the break, our goal coming from Gerard Ahern.  We dominated the second half but failed to kill off the game and paid the price at the finish. Best for Athea on the night were Michael Ahern, Paul Collins, Denis Greaney, Tom Collins, Kevin O`Keeffe, Pat Ahern and Brian McKenna.

Team: Timmy Enright, Michael Ahern, Padraig Reidy, Paul Collins, Mike Reidy, Martin Chawke (0-01), Denis Greaney, Neilus Hunt (0-1), Tom Collins, Gerard Ahern (1-02), Jamie Collins, Kevin O’Keeffe (0-01), Brian McKenna, Pa Ahern (0-05), Kevin Murphy (0-01). Subs: Conor Mullane, Sean McGrath, Brian Ahern, Jason Quille, John Cotter.

We now play Hospital/Herbertstown in the county quarter final.
